The first time I read the snail and the whale to my two year old, I cried.

The one year old went down quickly tonight so I've just sat in my bedroom listening to Dh read it to the two year old. Again, tears.

Something about how such a tiny snail puts such effort into saving his friend. He's just a little snail but he cares about his friend and found a way.

Also heartwarming to hear my dyslexic Dh, who hates reading out loud, to read to my eldest ds

The Velvetine Rabbit. Gets me every time.

Samind · 21/05/2019 19:11

Love you forever.

Stravapalava · 21/05/2019 19:15

Grandpa by John Burningham. Oh the last page Sad
The Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson. The old granny in the girl's memory gets me.
Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney. I totally identify with Big Nutbrown Hare. I love my DC so much it hurts and I end up welling up at the end when the Little Nutbrown Hare goes to sleep.

No matter what, just gives me a lump in my throat. I grew up thinking my parent's love depended on me being "good enough" so I tell my ds every day that promise to love him forever no matter what.

Also, the colours of home.... I read it at school and can't get through the book without having to stop and compose myself.

Bacardi101 · 21/05/2019 20:12

Samind yes every time I read this to my Dc’s I get a lump in my throat

Not so much stories, but anything by Nancy Tillman (makes me feel all poignant about parenthood) or Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s childrens books (not so much tear jerking but still lovely)

I’d know you anywhere, my love 💔

hagsrus0 · 21/05/2019 20:19

The Railway Children - "my Daddy" still gets me every time!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/05/2019 20:19

Sorry that last line is the title of a Nancy Tillman book 😄

Weepingwillows12 · 21/05/2019 20:20

Strangely snail and the whale for me too but it's more about opening your eyes to what's out there and the beauty in the world than saving the friend. Both my kids find it boring.

Guess how much I love you is sickly sweet and annoys me. My kids love it.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/05/2019 20:21

Cross post @downwenttheflag 😄

Also as a very young child a book by the Ahlbergs always made me bawl..... Bye Bye Baby I think??? A baby is lost and looking for their mummy.... brutal!

dontticklethetoad · 21/05/2019 20:21

Dogger, specifically "then Bella did a very kind thing" and Once There Were Giants are the ones the first come to mind.

AlbusPercival · 21/05/2019 20:22

Also paper dolls.

TheRLodger · 21/05/2019 20:22

Velveteen rabbit makes me go a bit misty eyed
