Iron supplements

I was told to take iron supplements for 6 months - I was very anaemic without even knowing it and they discovered it by chance while testing for something else. There is no specific cause, other than having had children and having periods (said my doc). I have a normal varied diet which contains iron.

What happens after 6 months? I've realised I don't have a plan and wondered how anyone else manages it. Do you have to keep taking iron tablets or does your body store it while taking the supplements?

Obviously I know I can just make an appointment to ask what to do next but just wondering.

Watching with interest as I've recently started taking Iron supplements to combat tiredness. Two weeks in with no marked difference yet but my friend said she noticed nothing for the first two months.
So no help to you there OP, sorry!

I haven't really seen a huge difference in energy levels, unfortunately. Maybe slightly but not what I was hoping. I find it odd that I was so severely anaemic but had no idea!

When did you notice the energy start to kick in @MrsBlondie ?

MrsBlondie · 21/05/2019 11:30

I take Ferrograd C Tablets.
Noticed a difference quite quickly (few weeks). I was suffering with heart palpations and such tiredness when exercising.

I started taking a multi vit and iron/vit C on alternate days. I stopped taking them for a week before I had a blood test and I felt awful! Surprisingly though, all my levels came back ok. I've started taking them again and beginning to feel better. So maybe try dropping down gradually after the 6 months? NB I am not a doctor!
