Is this dress ok for a christening?

I have a a christening coming up in a few weeks and no idea what to wear. I haven't been in a church for a sunday morning service since i was in primary school and have no idea what would be appropriate. Don't want to look too overdressed but pretty sure my usual sunday attire of jeans and tshirt would be too far the other way!

What do you all think of this?

firstly, don't worry about what is appropriate for a church.
Most churches on a Sunday morning will have everything from smart wedding type outfit to jeans and trainers.

So really you just need to know what the family are doing.
Expensive area, middle class, C of E church = summer frock and heels
City, big friendly family church type setting, pretty much anything!

(Can't get your clicky link to work btw.)

FiremanKing · 19/05/2019 17:03

It’s very casual.

It depends on how dressed up everyone else will be.

Personally that dress wouldn’t be dressy/stylish enough.

clpsmum · 19/05/2019 17:10

It's lovely

Thats what i get for trying to be clever!

It's an anglican church (just googled it!) but not being a believer myself, and living in a part of scotland where you are catholic or protestant and no one cares beyond that, I'm not actually sure what that means.

It's not my style but yeah it would be ok for a christening. Christenings and baptisms I've held or been too are a dress up affair. The men wear suits or a shirt with jeans etc most women wear dresses or black trousers.

silver1977 · 19/05/2019 17:14

I think it is too casual / everyday dress. Depends how comfortable you feel dressing up more than that?

Ime people dress up more for a christening. As it is spring/summer how about a nice colour?

Drogosnextwife · 19/05/2019 17:15

I think it's fine, not too dressy, not too casual.

NoSauce · 19/05/2019 17:15

It’s ok for a christening OP. Fine in fact. Do you like it?

steppemum · 19/05/2019 17:15

well, where we are that would be plenty dressy enough.
Anglican means protestant church, could be anything really, how smart are the family?
Christenings are not really that dressy unless you are rich!

LittleAndOften · 19/05/2019 17:16

It's the sort of dress that could be glammed up or dressed down, depending on shoes and accessories. Can you ask others who are going what they are wearing? IME the formality of christenings can really vary. Some go very weddingy, others v relaxed.

notsodimwit · 19/05/2019 17:16

It's lovely Smile

TapasForTwo · 19/05/2019 17:17

I don't think it is too casual. With a nice jacket and dressy shoes it will be perfect. It isn't a wedding. I like it, and you will be able to get lots of wear out of it.

CraftyGin · 19/05/2019 17:18

It’s fine, but you could dress up a notch if you wanted to.

ImNotNigel · 19/05/2019 17:20

Anglican is Church of England. In terms of formality ( not theologically ) it’s more like the Catholic Church than the Church of Scotland.

That Joe Browns dress you linked to would ok if you are relatively young and you wear it with nice sandals / shoes and a jacket / cardigan.

Not ok with denim jacket and Dr martens. Or if you are over 45 or very curvy because it will look frumpy.

CraftyGin · 19/05/2019 17:24

Eh? To the TPA.

icebearforpresident · 19/05/2019 17:29

My friends are casual enough but I can imagine that it will be more of a formal affair, both sides of the family have a bit of money. I missed their eldest daughters christening as I was on holiday, will need to see if o can find some photos.

I would dress it up a bit and wear nice sandals rather than boots like the model is wearing. But it’s casual enough that I would wear it again.

I’ve found an alternative, let me find a link (on my phone now)

It is a nice dress. Make sure you have a jacket or wrap as some churches are really cold even in mid summer. If the baptism is in the main service there will be everything from Jeans and T-shirt's to quite formal. If it is out of the main service you ate more likely to find family treating it like a wedding with high heels and hat.

Pinotjo · 19/05/2019 17:31

It's definitely appropriate, dress it up with heels, summery wedges, a cardi or jkt. You could wear after with flop flops/flat sandals. It's the kind of dress you could get a lot of wear out of

Pinotjo · 19/05/2019 17:33

Ps the last christening I went to the vicar was a hippyish chap and played the guitar to us, it was very informal but a very big church, I enjoyed it for a non church goer

LittleAndOften · 19/05/2019 17:33

Is there an event afterwards or just the service? I wouldn't go to too much trouble if it's just the service.

icebearforpresident · 19/05/2019 17:58

Some alternatives. Not a million miles from the first dress!

There’s lunch and drinks afterwards, back room of a pub type thing from the sounds of it, not just the service.

NanooCov · 19/05/2019 19:39

They're all totally fine for a christening. Not with boots though. I really like the red shirt dress myself.

Shockers · 19/05/2019 19:43

It’s absolutely fine for a christening, and wearable afterwards, which is a bonus.

ohdearmymistake · 19/05/2019 20:22

It's the sort of dress that will be easy to dress up jacket, heels plus it will be easy to wear any other time. I like it.
