If someone gifted you £1500 what would you spend it on?

I have been given the very kind gift of £1500 from a relative. To me it’s a huge amount of money, the person who gave it to me wants me to ‘enjoy it’ but I kind of feel wrong spending it on something that I don’t really need. I am a single mum of 2, I don’t have a lot of debt, I could use this to pay what I do owe but then I will have nothing to show for it. I do have a few hobbies and could use the money towards that but then I feel wrong for spending it on something that’s not essential (even though it’s enjoyable). I don’t think they want me to spend it on the kids, it’s for me to enjoy.

What would you spend it on?

I inherited £1,000 . I spent it on a holiday.

PottyPotterer · 16/05/2019 16:58

I recently had a similar amount come my way, also a LP. The sensible thing to do would have been to squirrel it away or buy myself a new bed but I've spent it on a holiday for me and ds, that way we both get to enjoy it, would that be an option?

blaaake · 16/05/2019 17:00

Go on holiday!

TheHobbitMum · 16/05/2019 17:01

Holiday with the kids!

Dandelion1993 · 16/05/2019 17:01

We were once gifted £2000 and used it to pay off the last of some debt.

LoafofSellotape · 16/05/2019 17:03

I'd put it towards uni for ds.

hatethinkingupnamechanges · 16/05/2019 17:03

At the moment, I would spend that sort of money on a new door!

Could you maybe use £1000 towards your debts and use the remaining £500 to treat yourself?

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 17:04

I did consider a holiday but my eldest doesn’t like going away, we plan on camping a bit this year as we have all the gear. I kind of feel like I want something to show for what I have a spent, I know a holiday will give us memories but in the past holidays have been a nightmare (both dc’s have ASD). We live near the coast and dd2 and I enjoy paddle boarding, we have one cheap paddleboard between us so I am considering buying myself a new board so dd can have my old one? A 2nd hand board would be around £500+ so would still leave me with £1000.

My debts are not huge and are manageable (should be debt free in a year). I’m pretty careful with money. I don’t think the person that gifted the money would want me using it to pay debt.

Get yourself a paddle board, maybe a new wet/dry suit? Then either book sometime to go use them with a bit more of the money and then I would say maybe 500 onto debts, because it will have a positive impact on your life for the future.

piffpaffpoff · 16/05/2019 17:10

Ooh, get the paddleboard for sire (I love mine!) but why not treat yourself to a new one?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 16/05/2019 17:12

Ask the kids what their perfect day out would be. Do that.
Then you ask yourself what your perfect day out would be, pay for child care and do it.
Whatevers left, treat yourself to something unecessary, hair do, nails, new clothes and shoes or what ever you fancy.
Stick remainder towards a debt free family Christmas.

(That's what I'd do anyway)

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 17:13

Thanks Rat I think I will end up with a new board and a full wetsuit. I’m just finding it hard to spend it, everything feels wrong, I have never been given a gift like this before. The board will make summer more fun for dd2 and I (as she will get my old one). I feel I should spend something on dd1 or put some money in an account for her, she does plan on going to uni.

I'd be really tempted to get a Merlin pass with part of it. I'd spend the rest on my house.

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 17:15

PiffPaff I have my eye on a board on eBay (almost new) for £500, I’m just working out how I can collect it as I only have roof bars on my camper and that’s currently in for repairs 🤣, I also have the problem of where to store it. Maybe a better inflatable board would be sensible?

Holiday, new clothes, some fun days out?

yearinyearout · 16/05/2019 17:17

A holiday for sure

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/05/2019 17:18

If it was to spend solely on me - Flower subscription, and a new guitar.

But realistically I’d pay for private speech and language lessons for my almost 2 year old. We’re on the list for NHS but they’ve said we’re looking at a year’s wait, and at £40 per session private we just can’t afford it.

CountFosco · 16/05/2019 17:19

DH and I have spent inheritances (more than one) in a similar ball park on a computer (many years ago!), put towards a house deposit, put towards a new car and a holiday.

ShahOfSplosh · 16/05/2019 17:20

Put some of it towards a subscription?

piffpaffpoff · 16/05/2019 17:21

I have two inflatables Love, they fold up to the size of a big rucksack. Budget for an electric pump too....👍

GeorgeTheBleeder · 16/05/2019 17:22

It may be that you already have all the qualifications and training you need and already have your dream occupation - if not, might it help towards something like that?

nighttimethoughts · 16/05/2019 17:22

I'd pay off my remaining debt (about £400) then live off the rest for a while.

Ideally though I'd go on holidayGrin

My Mum gifted me (and the rest of her immediate family) a similar sum eight years ago.

Her only caveat was we should use it on something specfic, not on day to day expenses.

Sis and BIL bought a painting, niece and DD put theirs towards a car each, nephew and wife put it towards a deposit on a house and I bought a rather large tanzanite and diamond ring.
Mum was pleased with all our choices.

And the moral of this story, do what is right for you at this time in your life. We all did and Mum was thrilled.

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 17:25

PiffPaff I have been eying up an electric pump (pumping by hand is a killer), the board I have at the moment isn’t that great, would like a bigger one. I might pay a visit to the paddleboard shop at the weekend and see what my options are.
