If someone gifted you £1500 what would you spend it on?

I have been given the very kind gift of £1500 from a relative. To me it’s a huge amount of money, the person who gave it to me wants me to ‘enjoy it’ but I kind of feel wrong spending it on something that I don’t really need. I am a single mum of 2, I don’t have a lot of debt, I could use this to pay what I do owe but then I will have nothing to show for it. I do have a few hobbies and could use the money towards that but then I feel wrong for spending it on something that’s not essential (even though it’s enjoyable). I don’t think they want me to spend it on the kids, it’s for me to enjoy.

What would you spend it on?

But ‘given’ without the addition of ‘gift’ doesn’t necessarily imply the same intention.

We would all recognise the slight but sometimes significant difference between being simply ‘given’ an item and having someone make us a gift of an item.

But I don’t like ‘gifted’ either! Grin

I would spend it on debts. That way you will free up more money quicker in which to better your and the kids lives.

After paying for a day out with the kids to whatever they fancy like cinema or soft okay etc depending on their ages.

Gifted is a stupid word.

OP what about a lovely handbag? It’s something that you will use everyday and so you will think of the person who gave you the money when you do.

Bloody hell! I've sworn not to get into these usage wrangles yet here I am. Even worse, I've started it Confused. Absurd. Am off now, gift away. Spend it wiselyGrin

Lovemusic33 · 17/05/2019 08:18

Gifted or given? Does it really mater? 🤣🤣

As I said before, I don’t want to use it to pay debts, I do have a small amount but I don’t struggle to pay them (I have money left each month).

I’m not really into fashion so a handbag isn’t something I would spend it on, I don’t have my nails or hair done (not something I enjoy), I rarely treat myself but often treat the kids, they have everything they need. If I leave it sat in my bank it will probably end up being eaten up by small things and it won’t really be enjoyed.

I was left £1500 by a relative I adored. She wanted me to enjoy it.

I decided I wanted something that I would always have to remember her by and bought something I would never otherwise have justified. An original oil painting. I saw it in a gallery and it was a place my relative loved and once took me to. £500. I would never in any other circumstances (except winning the lottery) consider doing that but it's perfect. It's in my lounge and I see it day and think of her and I can take it with me wherever I go. Everyone looks at it and says it's stunning.

The other £1,000 I am going to put towards going on holiday to somewhere special (I've only ever gone abroad) twice for a sort of once-in-a-lifetime thing, so I will have memories forever. All because of her.

I probably have about £1500 worth of Lego on mine/DDs current wish list (who am I kidding, more than £1500! And that's not including DHs...)

On a serious note... It would go towards the holiday we booked yesterday.

Well done for getting what you wanted.

How about buying your DC Premium Bonds with the £500 not yet earmarked?

NotSoThinLizzy · 17/05/2019 08:39

What about redecorating a room?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 17/05/2019 08:46

Art or a tree sounds lovely. But I also like the idea of redecorating your bedroom - as a LP with children with ASD I bet you a) could really do with having a lovely sanctuary and b) haven't spent any money on your own corner of the house for ages... I'd buy a new mattress, some lovely bedlinen, your new painting, maybe get yourself an Alexa so you can listen to your music, new drawers if you need them, a pretty little chair - just make yourself a lovely nest that makes you feel calm and relaxed every time you walk into it.

dustarr73 · 17/05/2019 09:16

If i got that money i would get myself a decent tattoo.Maybe get someone to look after the kids and go away yourself for a break.

Debt. But then I hate debt and knowing I'd paid a big chunk like that off would give me far more pleasure than any item ever could. It I had no debt, I'd put it towards driving lessons.

Kiwiinkits · 17/05/2019 09:24

Invest in a really, really good quality mattress and lovely linens.

Your sleep will thank you.

SuckingDieselFella · 17/05/2019 09:25

Holiday. But don't spend all of it on your family, buy one thing just for you.
