If someone gifted you £1500 what would you spend it on?

I have been given the very kind gift of £1500 from a relative. To me it’s a huge amount of money, the person who gave it to me wants me to ‘enjoy it’ but I kind of feel wrong spending it on something that I don’t really need. I am a single mum of 2, I don’t have a lot of debt, I could use this to pay what I do owe but then I will have nothing to show for it. I do have a few hobbies and could use the money towards that but then I feel wrong for spending it on something that’s not essential (even though it’s enjoyable). I don’t think they want me to spend it on the kids, it’s for me to enjoy.

What would you spend it on?

Paddleboard and related equipment sounds like a great idea if that's your thing. Definitely a fun thing that you and DC, to do together, which is great.

My first thought was I'd buy a new dry suit for scuba diving as I'm too fat for my existing one and I'm getting nowhere with losing the weight I need to fit into it Sad Hmm.

You can always split what's left over into paying off debt and putting some into savings so you have a bit of spare money next time the washer breaks or whatever.

Holiday
Some new bed linen

babbi · 16/05/2019 19:06

I’d definitely clear off the debt ... that would be a massive treat for me !
Then the money usually used for your debt payments - I’d save that ...
nothing makes me happier than knowing I’ve a couple of quid available for emergencies ...
That’s just me though ...

Otherwise- definitely a holiday

A relative gave me £1000, I paid of some debt, for me paying that off has
freed up some cash each month so I have the additional cash each month to do things with Ds. For me this was much more important than using if for a week's holiday. I have the option to now save for something next year and feel guilt free that I'm not 'frittering' it away on a short term holiday.
The temptation to piss it up the wall was huge 😁

whitehalleve · 16/05/2019 19:22

Holiday for sure.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 16/05/2019 19:54

I'd pay the debt off in your circumstances especially as you only have one income.

I'd add it to the children's savings if I had a gift like that. Every bit extra helps towards house deposits.

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 20:36

Barbara I bit the bullet and bought the board and equipment, I do need a new wetsuit for the same reason as you (I have tried losing the weight) but I will have to go somewhere to try them on.

I have £1000 left over. I’m not going to use it for debts as it just feels wrong, I do have savings some I’m not living on the breadline each month.

I’d buy a painting.

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 20:39

LordProf that’s a good idea, hadn’t considered buying a piece of art.

One third of a bottle of Manchester wine :)

BeardofZeus · 16/05/2019 20:42

A night at chewton glen in the treehouse with dinner tree service!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 16/05/2019 20:55

Lipo

stoplickingthetelly · 16/05/2019 21:07

I’d spend on decorating. The house still needs quite a bit of decorating and that would really help.

Devonishome1 · 16/05/2019 21:30

Probably a new sofa

Furble · 16/05/2019 21:35

When my Grandma gifted me 1000 I decided to splash out on the best bed and mattress I could get for that money. It was the best money I ever spent and the sleep has been transformative!

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/05/2019 21:40

If it was me:
£500 picture so I have something to show
£500 debts
£500 holiday fund

Lovemusic33 · 16/05/2019 21:55

The money came from my grandma, I would like to buy something that will will make me think of here, maybe jewellery or a painting, or possibly a tree to go in my garden to remember my grandad who passed away a couple years ago.

That would just be swallowed up in my overdraft Sad
But, if it wasn't, I would use it on a holiday for DC, DH and I

BroomstickOfLove · 16/05/2019 22:35

I'd put a proper fireplace in my house.

longwayoff · 16/05/2019 23:49

Sorry, pedants unite here, not stopping. GIVEN. GAVE. Not GIFTED. Please. Ah, that's better.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 16/05/2019 23:55

Although ... ‘gifted’ is surely a contraction of ‘made [one] a gift of’ which is both slightly different to, and more specific than ‘gave’.

Wouldn’t you say?

BlackPrism · 17/05/2019 00:01

I just got £2k. I spent 500 paying off debt and the rest is sitting in my bank... waiting. I'll get a yoga subscription probably (£150) and some bath goodies. Maybe some new trainers. then I'll lock it away so I never have to feel the edge of the bank account again

longwayoff · 17/05/2019 06:57

No george, I wouldn't say that. How can it be more specific? One is given a gift. Someone gave it away. Verb not noun.

bebeboeuf · 17/05/2019 07:16

Agree with @longwayoff

I just started a thread yesterday as I can’t fathom why the use of gifted seems so popular and how no one uses given anymore Confused

As they said they wanted you to spoil yourself could you split it, put it half to debt and half on something you want to do?
