My son has a bird box in his garden, and this year a pair of Great Tits nested in there. Babies hatched, and we’ve been watching the parents flying in and out. On Friday, it looked as if only one parent was there. Yesterday afternoon, the lone parent wasn’t seen, and this morning, again, nothing. Babies cheeping and peering out. Called RSPCA after trying to follow their very uninformative flow chart. They said to “monitor things and call back in a couple of hours” Which we did, and they said they would “see what they could do”. They called back at 3pm, by which time the sun has shone, it’s been hot, the babies have no food/water, and said they wouldn’t come out as the “couldn’t interfere with a nest”. So now the babies are dead. No one wanted to help, and no one was interested. I am so sad and angry. Would it have been better if we killed them to save them suffering?

A wildlife rescue would have been better to call, there are also rescues that just help birds. Poor little things, wonder what happened to the parents.

Have you checked the babies are actually dead?

Steamfan · 14/05/2019 21:01

They are - we've checked

Nature took it's course. It's unfortunate but this happens all the time.

Livedandlearned · 14/05/2019 21:10

Even wildlife rescue are limited in what they can do to help baby birds.

Sooo cruel 😩😓

Sorry this happened OP. It's upsetting. Happened the swallows in our shed last year. The swallows returned this year and I looked up a local wildlife rescue so that if it happens again I can be better prepared and give them a call. But as a pp said, sometimes these things happen. It's hard to make peace with.
