Enoh to beg land When? *

5 LETTERS* in the answer

Yes I have spelt it correctly, it is from 1980s newspaper either Times or Telegraph

Please help me or at least tell me how to solve it cos I am totally confused by it

(I can't remember if land has a capital letter or not but When deffo has capital and question mark and I know Enoh does have a capital E)

Thank you wonderful MNetters

I have found the answer bit have no idea how this one works. Enoh isn't a word, but it seems that's part of the clue!

You've copied the clue slightly wrong, afaict

InGoodCompany · 14/05/2019 19:55

Hmm the W suggests a name beginning with W and I would say WOODY after Woody Guthrie, who wrote "This Land is Your Land". But my gut instinct is that it must be YEMEN (1980s theme) or NEVER- for the question "When?" It could also be PLEAD for the begging part.

Do any of those fit?

InGoodCompany · 14/05/2019 19:57

Ahhh! Is it ENOCH?

Have you got any letters?

The definition is probably “when”. I’d guess a four letter word relating to “enoh” followed by the letter “l” for the begging of land.

Livedandlearned · 14/05/2019 20:11

That's what i thought too

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2019 20:14

I'm dying for someone to get this so I can begin to understand it. I've found someone talking about it but still not giving the answer!

Livedandlearned · 14/05/2019 20:19

Working back from the answer, which I found online....

Enoh is a variety of apricot. If you remove the ‘c’ that is kind of missing from Enoch, plus the to, you are left with Apri, beg the l from land as pp suggested and you get April, the answer to When?

I'm not entirely satisfied with this explanation though...

Livedandlearned · 14/05/2019 20:21

Tbf i can't make sense of what i just linked to Blush

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2019 20:21

That's what I found but he still doesn't give the answer.

Wincarnis · 14/05/2019 20:24

April

It’s from Robert Browning’s poem ...Home thoughts from abroad

Oh to be in England now that April’s there

Enoh to beg land.......EN/oh to be/GLAND.....Oh to be in England

popehilarious · 14/05/2019 20:26

^^ thanks! Would never have gotten that.

Livedandlearned · 14/05/2019 20:27

This is why I'm bad at CC

PurpleDaisies · 14/05/2019 20:30

Ah! “Oh to be” literally inside the word England.

That’s stinky hard. I’m really good at cryptic crosswords and that was too hard for me.

PurpleDaisies · 14/05/2019 20:31

Not knowing the poem was a bit of a disadvantage to be fair!

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2019 20:33

Grrr.

Michaelbaubles · 14/05/2019 20:35

That’s a bugger of a question. Not sure I’d ever have got it and I do know the poem!

InGoodCompany · 14/05/2019 20:42

Wow that was HARD but what a satisfaction to get it right! I know the poem but couldn't make the link,

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 14/05/2019 21:12

I had thought Enoch to be one of the answers, not a typo in the clue. What a fantastic clue it was, in the end! Thanks for sharing
