Work holidays

So I booked holidays for a week in the next few months or so I thought. Until I heard the manager give those dates to someone else. I said I had it off, they checked the calendar and said my name wasn't down but the other holidays I had requested at the same time had my name down just not the week one. I told the manager that I requested them at the same time and had handed those dates to them on a post it to check and then confirm. She had then confirmed with me in person but not in writing and then obviously has booked me in for some not the others.

I was told that I had lied about requesting both sets of dates until another manager had said they remembered me asking them to check if they were free first. I was then told that they had gave those dates to someone else and they would have to see what they could do.

Wwyd?

Have you actually booked and paid for a holiday?

tinatsarina · 14/05/2019 19:14

No abroad holiday booked but that's not the point the manager verbally confirmed these days off and then has tried to tell me I was lying because they forgot to write my name down on those dates

If you’ve not got anything in writing I think j you’re pretty screwed to be honest, just a game of he said she said

I guess it's frustrating because it was verbally confirmed to me that I was ok to have those holidays. This manager is the only one who is able to book people's holidays. If I hadn't overheard that conversation today I would have taken those holidays and they would be phoning me saying I hadn't requested them off when I did!! The whole place is a shambles tbh and it doesn't help with managers who can't admit their mistake and call you a liar to cover themselves!!!

How is holiday recorded?

bloatedbird · 15/05/2019 06:14

It can't just be on post it notes and verbal confirmation? Did she only verbally communicate the other dates too?

Sounds ridiculous

Do you plan to stay in this job long term? I wouldn’t be too comfortable in a job where they’re so quick to call me a liar

We had this with a company; people had to email the coordinator and would claim they were the ‘first’ to request particular dates (but no way of knowing others hadn’t also emailed the manager to request same dates before them) - and it was always the same people having leave confirmed and the same few having theirs refused.

In the end, and after some very bad feeling that someone who had put in their request for leave 9 months ahead (and had had an email reply confirming no other requests for dates so agreed) so had booked to go to a wedding abroad was then denied the leave in favour of one of the usual late bookers who always got their leave requests. They produced the email and got their leave but it was not a happy time as the other staff member still got their leave and it left the company short and both remaining staff and clients had to suck up poor service for that time period.

Now the company has a triplicate copy leave request book with numbered requests - you fill in your request, it goes to the coordinator to be signed off or refused and the copies are forwarded to staff member, manager and back office who manage leave allowances (there was also an issue of certain staff getting almost twice the allowed leave that everyone else was taking). Funnily enough the leave is much more fairly distributed and everyone gets the same opportunity to be off!!

See that's the thing there is no email system or anything it's basically I write down what dates I want, the manager has a calender on the wall that they then look at and come back to me to say if the dates were free, if they are they then write my name in on those dates which they did for may not July hols but I gave the dates on the same post it. They told me I was a liar and why would they possibly write my name on Mays but not July's? No one else had booked the days as I had another manager (who isn't able to confirm holidays) check the dates were free before I asked. The holiday manager then said to me those dates are all free do you want them booked and I said yes. If I hadn't overheard the conversation with the other staff member I would have still thought the July dates were booked.
