Cancelling the services of a tax agent

Please can someone advise on this.

Last year a relative signed up to a tax agent who processed a backdated claim for work expenses.

This year I have offered to help him do a self assessment online tax return so he no longer needs the agent.

I assume we need to notify both the agent and HMRC. Does this have to be done by letter or can we do this by email or telephone? How long should we then wait before then doing this year’s tax return. I am worried we could get tangled up with the agent if we do it to soon and they will want paying.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.
