I think I've massively messed up tonight!

So earlier this evening, DD asked me "mummy why shouldn't we let other people see our private parts and what are they for".

I was thrown off by the "why shouldn't we let other people see" part and I ended up blurting our that our private parts are for making babies. I have no idea why I didn't just say "they are for going to the toilet" 😩 and I'm now really upset with myself. I didn't elaborate further on that but i really wish I hadn't told her that yet.

How can I backtrack from this? Should I back track? What should I do if she asks more questions? She is 5 and a half.

Total over reaction. She hasn't even asked any further questions.

If she asks more questions just say they are our private areas.

Well they are for making babies so I don't see how you've massively messed up. You've not scarred her for life by telling her. Don't worry.

I can recommend the book "Amazing You" ; it explains bodies, private parts and reproduction in an age-appropriate way for children your DD's age.

I read it several times with DD (now 8), she was about 5 when I bought it.

You haven't said anything untrue, and she needs to know what her private parts are for, but this kind of book definitely helps with fielding follow up questions!
