How should remainers vote in the EU elections

We’re less than 2 weeks away, how is everyone thinking of voting? I’m going with Change UK as I’m sick if all other parties. I genuinely have lost respect for both main parties. But then I was surprised to see change UK really not gathering much support. I also can’t believe Labour are polling so strongly seeing as JC has fudged Brexit to death.

In a word Mrs Pear, no. The 2016 election was rigged with illegal funds and lies. Brexit was and still is a shot idea and I'll always campaign against it.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 13/05/2019 10:18

Shit idea.

DotOnTheHorizon · 13/05/2019 10:21

I'm conflicted. Normally LibDem would be my choice, but I'm not on board with their GC position (same goes for the Greens)

But it’s not a campaign is it? The majority chose to believe the lies and voted to leave. That surely should be respected? If we don’t we are treading a very fine line of what is a democracy.

borntobequiet · 13/05/2019 10:50

I'm unhappy with the LDs on their non-GC stance. But the EU elections aren't about that. So I'll vote LD.
I've already resigned my membership and made my GC views known to them.

DGRossetti · 13/05/2019 10:52

I understand now how the Irish and Jamaicans felt arriving in Britain in the 60s/70s/80s

When my DF started work in the UK he was "made" to sit with the Indians and West Indians as "foreign" (one reason why we had a lot of Indian and West Indian friends ....).

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/05/2019 10:53

Does anyone else not think that this vote is a kick in the teeth to democracy?

Democracy didn't end in 2016 and how can you break democracy with more democracy?

DGRossetti · 13/05/2019 10:56

Democracy isn't a fixed point in time. It's a process and a journey. Much like a marriage. Which even as arguably a more sacred institution allows for people to change their minds.

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/05/2019 11:01

Really???!!!
Are you serious?

So is someone defrauded you in real life of your hard earned £, you think they should get off any legal prosecution because you believed them?

bellinisurge · 13/05/2019 11:03

I don't see it as a kick in the teeth for democracy. I see it as grown up stuff finally sinking in for the teenagers and toddlers. We are only in this stupid mess because no teenager/toddler would accept our grown up responsibilities under GFA.
But then I think it's pretty clear that the flouncing/tantrumming teenagers and toddlers will get the single largest set of votes - the Brexshit Party - and we will be going through the brinksmanship shit again by October 31.

NameChangeNugget · 13/05/2019 11:04

I’m a remainer too and think I’ll vote green.

How anyone can trust the FibDems is beyond me.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/05/2019 11:15

The obvious answer is vote for whichever Remain party has the best chance of winning where you are. You don't have to vote the same way in the next general election - and it may well be the case that whoever you do vote for won't be there in a year or two anyway.

This. I'll hold my nose if necessary.

bellinisurge · 13/05/2019 11:16

I don't trust the Fib Dems - I think the coalition fiasco was a wake up call to them about what coalition negotiations are actually about.

But this is about Brexit and an election to a Parliament that we probably won't be participating in. So I want to send a message. If I have to hold my nose to send it, I will.

If I thought Labour were offering a clear position I might even be tempt to vote Labour in this unique circumstance. And I vowed never to vote Labour led by Corbyn. But I would have held my nose to send a message by voting Labour in these elections if I knew what the fuck I would be voting for.

I haven't "become a Lib Dem" - they are shifty bastards in local government and their position on protecting women's rights is shocking. As is the Greens.
I would like to vote Change UK but the bitter truth is that they need some big bucks to make some loud noise right now. So it's Lib Dems that get my vote.

EmployeeOfTheMonth2019 · 13/05/2019 11:29

I've had a personally addressed letter from Vince Cable. I have no idea why. I'm not a member of the Lib Dems or anything.

But the contents might assist anyone who's unsure how to vote.

Peregrina · 13/05/2019 12:09

Does anyone else not think that this vote is a kick in the teeth to democracy?

Emphatically not. We primarily have a Parliamentary Democracy. May went to the Country in 2017 on a hard Brexit ticket, and lost her majority, so her party only now Governs because of the DUP votes, which no one in Great Britain could vote for. Labour also had a pro-Brexit ticket, albeit a softer one, and they didn't win either, so neither party can say they have a mandate for Brexit.

Scotland voted Remain and the largest party representing Scotland at Westminster is still the SNP, which is a Remain party, so they IMO still do have a mandate from their electorate.

To my mind also, the split in Parliament very well represents the split in the country and the debates and votes on them represented that also. But for me, MPs trying to thrash out the issues, and genuinely trying to work out what they thought was best for their country and their constituents was democracy in action and very healthy too.

bellinisurge · 13/05/2019 12:51

@EmployeeOfTheMonth2019 - your personally addressed letter is just a good old fashioned mail merge from the electoral roll. All candidates get access to it and can send one personally addressed communication from it. I've just got my Brexshit Party one. Tbey must know we are running low on toilet paper

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/05/2019 13:02

I'm voting Lib Dem. They've been consistent. We have no idea what we will get with Change UK. I'd rather have Remain MEPs that I know have a voice consistent with my own views on many (not all) issues than ones who frankly could end up with policies I disagree with.

I also like my current MEP Catherine Bearder. She works hard and she responds to my emails.

DadDadDad · 13/05/2019 13:15

@Peregrina - I don't think there's much chance of LD getting 20 MEPs either - I was just using that to show the worst that you could imagine if you voted LD even if you don't like them. You're hardly handing Vince the keys to Number 10! You're not even giving him much more influence in the EU, given there are 750 MEPs and it's run by the Commission.

Ellabella989 · 13/05/2019 13:21

I’m a remainer and will vote Green

MM19 · 13/05/2019 13:47

I am voting Lib Dem. I have previously voted Labour although ours probably seems a very typical Tory household - senior management in the private sector, everyone educated at public school, BUPA’d to the hilt, very affluent v. the general population (though middling for London!)

Tuition fees don’t bother me - people really need to study the repayment small print before decrying them. Lib Dems kept the Tory monsters at bay and we only realised when they were gone quite how monstrous they were. Plus they were instrumental in keeping free school meals when the Tories were determined to axe them. In any case, I think it is worth holding one’s nose - this is undeniably a single issue election.

Peregrina · 13/05/2019 17:20

Even if the LibDems were to get the keys to No 10, it won't be Vince who gets them. He still plans to stand down soon.

averylongtimeago · 14/05/2019 17:41

I am voting libdem this time- probably won't in a GE, but this is a single issue vote and they are up front remain.
Non of the parties tick all the boxes anyway- so the libdems backed the coalition- then we have Corbynor not or the Tories? Or the BNP fascists Brexit party/Ukip.
What a wonderful choice!

JuneFromBethesda · 14/05/2019 17:59

Short memories indeed Hmm the Lib Dem's have been consistent in their approach to Brexit since the beginning. They were backed into a corner during the coalition and my feeling is they lessened the impact of many Tory policies but the price extorted from them by the nasty party was fee increases - which no one will ever let them forget. Yet labour and the tories break election promise after promise and no one bats an eyelid....

Excellent post khaleesi

The Lib Dems get my vote. I'm scared that the Remain vote will be split and I hope that most Remain voters will have the sense to vote tactically. The Brexit party is inevitably, sadly, going to do well and I'm dreading Farage's smug face when the results are out, but hopefully tactical voting can limit the damage.
