DH has started getting horrible enormous angry spots on his face (he's 52) - his skin is fairly typical bloke skin for his age but occasionally flares up into being flakey and sensitive.

The spots are mostly on his cheeks immediately either side of his nose and last about 10 days but there has been a rogue one on his eyebrow. He hasn't changed diet or lifestyle lately and we have no idea what's causing it or how to fix. Germolene is not really helping (and I have suggested it might be clogging things).

Really appreciate the view of the hive mind 🐝🐝🐝🐝

Have you had this? Have you been able to fix it? Halp!

Is he on any medication for anything?

My only experience is in managing my own acne. The best routine I've found is using a gentle wash (like Cetaphil), an oil-free non-comedogenic moisturizer (I use cetaphil again), then 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. It's important that it's 2.5% benzoyl peroxide- not the 10% or 5% that is the standard available. Acne.org has a good description of what to do and lots of product and brand suggestions.

Do the routine morning and night using lukewarm water, being very gentle to reduce redness and dryness (e.g. no scrubbing, pat the face dry). Don't do the face washing part in the shower. The benzoyl peroxide will take a week or so to adapt to, he can build it up from a small amount at first.

Not on any medication, no. Is all very odd.
Thank you for the tips SpaceCadet - will pass them on. He doesn't usually have any spots so I don't know if he should just treat for acne, or whether there's some magic bullet revelation that will then seem really obvious. 🤷🏼‍♀️
