Films that wouldn't work the same way today

Just following on from the Mrs Doubtfire thread, I was just wondering what, fairly recent films, just wouldn't work the same way today?

My first thought was Home Alone. I mean, Kevin's mum would just ring his mobile or message him somehow, right? Plus, the Wet Bandits would have probably been all over social media. And Kevin could have avoided the problems buying his toothbrush if he had just used the self service check out!

Any others out there?

Blair Witch. They would have followed a gps and used find my friend when one went missing.

NewFoneWhoDis · 14/05/2019 17:11

The Snapper.

It wasn't viewed as rape then but it would certainly be now.

ScreamingValenta · 14/05/2019 17:15

@wanderings

Not to mention that one of the teachers is going out with the girl who gives him a lift!

PrincessTiggerlily · 14/05/2019 17:17

Bridget Jones - it says the Japanese are a cruel race. After reading the 'I had a baby in Japan' thread where no pain killers are used during birth I Think they have a point!

Sakura7 · 14/05/2019 17:19

Love Actually has not aged well. I loved it at the time, but saw it again at Christmas and cringed. The bodyshaming of Martine McCutcheon's character is ridiculous, as is the creepy guy who goes to America for sex.

Sakura7 · 14/05/2019 17:21

Also agree about The Snapper NewFoneWhoDis. Honestly can't understand how it wasn't seen as rape at the time.

ScreamingValenta · 14/05/2019 17:23

Back to the Future II

Because we didn't get flying cars or hover boards by 2015 Sad.

You've got mail: the dial up internet tones and the though of waiting for email to appear!

Ginger1982 · 14/05/2019 19:16

All great examples! 😆

That line in Four Weddings....when a middle aged guy is sitting in a bar reminiscing fondly about his boarding school days, and talks with a rueful smile about being "buggered senseless" by an older boy. Horrible ļine for a comedy film.

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/05/2019 20:18

GREASE - aka if you want a boyfriend you have to become a sex object or at least dress and act like one. Oh and smoking when you don't smoke is sexy. Bleurgh.

Annoying the message is so shit coz the songs are so catchy.

louise5754 · 14/05/2019 20:27

Pride and Prejudice. It wouldn't take them so long to tell each other how they both felt.

louise5754 · 14/05/2019 20:27

Because they could DM or text.

Clawdy · 14/05/2019 20:29

Yes, but at least Danny Z also shows he is trying to change with the geeky cardigan on! He does whip it off rather quickly though.......Grin

redexpat · 14/05/2019 21:04

The comment by Bridget Jones' mother about the Japanese was awful, but the casual racism part of her character, and I think I remember it forming part of the plot. BJ works out Daniel Cleaver was lying because her mother says it.

MockerstheFeManist · 14/05/2019 21:10

The History Boys:

Firstly, the jolly pederastic school-master who was such a laugh, not any more.

Second, the supposedly 1983 current interpretations of the causes of WW1 were in fact those of when Alan Bennett was at university. By the 80s, German War Guilt was very much back in vogue.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 14/05/2019 21:11

I watched Splash with DD(8) & I was amazed at how I viewed it now. The bit when she’s naked & everyone’s taking pictures, the Tom Hanks character taking full advantage of her & loads of other bits that would just not get made now.

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/05/2019 21:12

@Clawdy Haha true! If only they could have made a leather cardigan to satisfy everyone #EqualOppsForGeeksAndJocks

Actually that leather cardigan could be a good look, I might see if I can find one...

MockerstheFeManist · 14/05/2019 21:15

...And no less than Molly Ringwald herself has commented on the bit in The Breakfast Club where she is apparently sexually assulted under the desk. Saint John Hughes would have us think that was a laugh in 1985.
MR says she was reluctant to let her kids watch it.

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/05/2019 21:15

@Inmyownlittlecorner Shit another of my faves ruined! So true. It's like mermaid upskirting. Upraising?

A few Hanks ones on dodgy ground even though I love him. If Big had been a female lead it wouldn't have been made... implied sex with a 30 year old etc.

Don't think a male lead one would be made now either. I feel bad I never picked up on stuff like that but I was a kid myself!

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/05/2019 21:15

*uptailing

chilledteacher · 14/05/2019 21:16

@ThatCurlyGirl 100% agree! Was going to say Grease for the same reasons but RTFT first to check I hadn't been beaten to it.
On the same vein though- lots of Disney films. A girl needs a prince to come and rescue her? Pur-lease!! 🙄

MockerstheFeManist · 14/05/2019 21:19

....I'm on a roll now

Logan's Run: Michael York has to scrap and wrestle and fight and grapple, and Jenny Aggutter just sort of stands there and watches.

(But then again it was not a frock for fighting in.)

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/05/2019 21:20

@chilledteacher Oh god don't get me started on Disney!!

Has been great to see some improvements with things like Brave and I thought Tangled would be the same but ended up a bit rescuey even though Rapunzel is ace.

When I watch the older Disney films I have a feminist commentary going on in my head the whole time which I don't think is the aim lol.

Spoiler alert: I've worked for Disney but in recent years and for far more kickass princesses :)

ThatCurlyGirl · 14/05/2019 21:25

@MockerstheFeManist Oh no you've mentioned Jenny Aggutter and my brain immediately shouted RAILWAY CHILDREN and now I'm ugly crying. My god that's a good film but it's an emotional rollercoaster!
