Why is everyone in the family suddenly itching like crazy?!

No rashes, no bed bugs (I’ve checked), teenager told me yesterday she felt really itchy. I woke up at 3am with itches everywhere. DD 4 is scratching herself like mad!

What the hell could it be?

Hayfever? I get itchy with some tree pollen

Scabies, new washing powder, been near animals, sprayed anything in the house.

Waking up itching in the night definitely makes me think of scabies. Look at scabies pics online and then check your crevices again. You don't get a rash but if you look carefully you can see where they've burrowed.

Btw, they only show the worst scabies pics online! Mine were so unnoticeable that even doctors didn't diagnose me for a year so check carefully!

First guess would be washing powder

local papers here have got warnings about some continental caterpillars that have fine hairs on that will irritate - but not just if you touch the caterpillar - they can jettison them and the hairs will float on the wind/become dust and irritate the skin if they touch it, even if not attached to the caterpillar. Might be that there were some of these caterpillars near you too?

The caterpillars are black with orange dots and orangey hairs on.

That's scabies.

You need some treatment prescribing and wash all bedding at 60 degrees C

Clean anywhere and everywhere and throw everything in the wash.
