Do you ever find yourself using your parents' expressions and words ?

I do. My Mum frequently said stuff like 'must go and spend a penny', 'it's nice to sit down' and 'bubbles' or 'bottoms' if she disagreed with someone. In a similar vein, Dad would often say 'it's been a long week/year', irrespective of the actual time frame. Now I'm in early middle age, I find I'm saying all of these things more and more. I hope I'm not the only one.

I do everything in my power to not be in any way like my mother-so no.

StealthPolarBear · 11/05/2019 16:54

Yes I've started saying to my children the things I used to roll my eyes at when my parents said them to me. I don't intend to, I just open my mouth and out they come.

Dowser · 11/05/2019 18:27

Oh god yes
Even what my grandmother said
I’d tell you but I’ve forhotten as I’ve had a gin and tonic and I don’t drink 😂

Dowser · 11/05/2019 18:28

Nope....it’s gone... hic

Dowser · 11/05/2019 18:29

I’ll have your guts for garters

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 11/05/2019 18:31

What's that phrase? 'I open my mouth and my mother comes out.'

One exclamation my DM used to use has been picked up from me by DD.

Topseyt · 11/05/2019 18:34

Oh yes! Quite often I catch myself doing this.

When we were growing up, if someone was spending a long time in the bathroom taking a leisurely dump my mother would shout "Oy, have you gone down the hole in there?"

I have used that on my own DH and my DDs.

Lllot5 · 11/05/2019 18:37

My mum has a saying /phrase for every occasion. Now I’m saying them too.
Someone is miserable. Got a face as long as a gasman’s mac.
Black as your hat.
Up and down like tower bridge.
And hundreds more.

picklemepopcorn · 11/05/2019 18:38

All these things. And more since my dad died. I seem to channel him.

SimonJT · 11/05/2019 18:39

@WoollyMummoth me too

MatthewBramble · 11/05/2019 18:39

Not only do I use DF's expressions but in my head I say them in exactly the same tone of voice. Scary.

StandardPoodle · 11/05/2019 19:58

Oh yes - especially the "spend a penny" one.
I have also caught myself saying "When I was young......."
