A man just walked into my house...

luciapenguin · 11/05/2019 12:00

I was upstairs, and went to open the window when I see a man walking out of my house (out of my front garden). I watched him from the window and he didn't go into anyone else's house, and left our street.

I thought it was really odd as he wasn't a Royal Mail postman or anything, but I went downstairs to check whether he had put anything through our letterbox. Nothing there. I opened the door to see if anything he had put in the letterbox had fallen out- again, nothing.

Can anyone think of a logical explanation (I have anxiety) or is this really dodgy?

And to be clear - am not particularly bothered about this thread in particular but we don't have an edit button as posters but accept that threads can be deleted etc but usually MNHQ will give a reason (not that everyone will agree with that Grin ) but if MNHQ are retrospectively name changing for posters and retaining the thread seems to me to be editorial edit button - which if policy it would be good to know...

AnyFucker · 11/05/2019 23:05

Op has misrepresented the whole premise of the thread by totally fabricating the title

Yes, there is something "wrong" with that

And something dodgy about a retrospective name change ? Is op a HQ'er ? Confused

pallisers · 11/05/2019 23:33

Oh you are troll hunting then - not just being mean to a woman who clearly stated that she was anxious. That's fine then - oh wait again, I thought that was against the rules?

But thank you for making me smile with the pomposity of "misrepresented the whole premise of the thread by totally fabricating the title". You do know you are on an internet forum and not listening to evidence in a parliamentary committee?

Knitclubchatter · 11/05/2019 23:39

i'm not reading 9 pages but here goes my possible scenario....
garbage/a receipt got blown by the wind into the OP's yard.
the fellow opened the gate, retrieved his receipt or coffee lid and continued on his merry way.

Dyrne · 12/05/2019 09:34

pallisers it’s not really “troll hunting” to wonder why an entire retrospective name change has happened - that’s not standard trolling, that usually requires MNHQ intervention, and there’s been no word from them on why...

FiremanKing · 12/05/2019 10:01

I wonder why a name change was issued rather than just deleting the thread altogether?

Shaggydog99 · 12/05/2019 16:38

The thread title was deliberate, because I knew that there was a slim chance of getting replies if I said "man walked into my front garden. I needed to hear some advice.

So you lied.

Vynalbob · 12/05/2019 17:26

Meter reading

Cookingclass · 12/05/2019 17:29

OMG biggest click bait title ever! Nobody was in your house! Chill out.

Tigerlilly17 · 12/05/2019 17:30

More likely some local scumbag trying doors to potentially rob you. Keep it locked at all times and keys away from door.

Liketoshop · 12/05/2019 17:32

Not sure the point of all this.. He walked into your garden couldn't or didn't enter your house and exited. Done.
Maybe his £ note blew into your garden and he fetched it.

DreamsOfDownUnder · 12/05/2019 17:34

I have gone up quite close to houses to see a door number whilst I'm looking for an address.

I live in a rougher area not upper class as you seem to think that's the reason people aren't worrying. I wouldnt be phased, as long as you keep doors and windows shut, don't keep keys near the front door and have a cctv/security system you will be fine. You had a misleading headline which leads me to think you are dramatic.

Dillydallyer · 12/05/2019 17:37

Haven’t read the full thread but I’m a police call taker. Yes, this does happen. Quite often chancers do try car and house door handles in broad daylight, especially when the property is lived in by elderly people. It’s entirely possible that he was a chancer. If we received this report we wouldn’t laugh at the caller like a lot of people on here have laughed at the OP. We would actually record it as intelligence in the area. We wouldn’t send someone out if he had gone but it’s handy to know things like this, especially in high crime areas. But people who take the piss out of others for informing the police are the reason why some people hesitate to call. Then something happens that could have been prevented if only we had the intel on the system....

Maybe it was nothing. Wrong house, something blew in the garden (seriously 🙄). But maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was someone targeting elderly people with a view to burgling their property. Always better to err on the side or caution and let police know, no matter how silly it seems.

PigOnStilts · 12/05/2019 17:37

Chalk markings is total Enid bottom style bollocks, why do these get brought up?
Do you think they get stuck on the local Crim WhatsApp group? What a shame there isn't a more efficient way of sharing information......

ArDali1 · 12/05/2019 17:39

Maybe it was a ghost?

I believe the OP has a right to be concerned if her area is quite common for burglaries.

They often like to peak through or listen to see if anyone is in.

Also they usually like to keep an eye on people's daily routine, so maybe (not to scare you op) this person has been watching your house for a while and was going to check if he could hear noise before attempting to break in.

user1471590586 · 12/05/2019 17:40

There has been similar things happening in our area. People spotted on CCTV trying house and car doors. So yes I would take it seriously. Are you in any local area Facebook groups? People often post such sightings locally round my area so others are vigilant.

TigerTooth · 12/05/2019 17:41

Checking if you’ve got Chubb locks/ alarms/ cameras -doing a security recital to come back later and break in?
Or
He’d wanted to ask for a cutting of your begonias and then he lost his nerve and decided against it?

StrangeLookingParasite · 12/05/2019 17:43

Whatever. people are having bantz with themselves - hilarious! - and knocking themselves out to show the OP how stupid she is. Who cares if this is a genuinely anxious person looking for reassurance.

I completely agree with you pallisers. People falling over themselves being smartarses.

Talulah99 · 12/05/2019 17:44

I can understand your concern as I also live in an area where there’s been a lot of burglaries, car crime etc. I had a really dodgy guy knock on our door trying to sell stuff and asking loads of questions like ‘i guess you’re at work during the day’etc. I emailed our local police station(got the details online) they had had other emails saying the same. If you’re really worried contact your local police. Trust your instincts! Can’t do any harm!

StrangeLookingParasite · 12/05/2019 17:45

And I have seen chalk markings outside buildings, and seen people doing them, though I'm not in the UK. So not a total myth.

waterlego · 12/05/2019 17:46

My husband went up someone’s driveway yesterday to retrieve our dog’s tennis ball which had been dropped and rolled into the drive. I was already along the alleyway with the dog so we wouldn’t have been visible from the house. Perhaps it was something like that.

FiremanKing · 12/05/2019 17:47

It was the postcode lottery man come to tell her she was the only house in the street but as he walked down her path his wife texted him to say she’s run off with the plumber and taken the dog with her.

He did an abrupt point turn and has used the cash to relocate to Panama.

TigerTooth · 12/05/2019 17:49

Can anyone be bothered to tell me what a troll hunter is?
I think I know what a troll is because I looked at Dd’s Instagram and she said I was a troll(😮) so a troll is following people, maybe surreptitiously? But how does one troll hunt?
Genuine question but totally get it if nobody replies!
