A man just walked into my house...

I was upstairs, and went to open the window when I see a man walking out of my house (out of my front garden). I watched him from the window and he didn't go into anyone else's house, and left our street.

I thought it was really odd as he wasn't a Royal Mail postman or anything, but I went downstairs to check whether he had put anything through our letterbox. Nothing there. I opened the door to see if anything he had put in the letterbox had fallen out- again, nothing.

Can anyone think of a logical explanation (I have anxiety) or is this really dodgy?

What a ducking non post, it’s actually classically pathetic.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/05/2019 17:57

Likely he’s a chancer, taking a look at your property

Hi I have chickens and sell the eggs to customers have done this for 10 years but last week I opened the door to a woman who could hardly speak English I could not understand what she was saying I thought she wanted to speak to my husband so got my husband but before I knew it the woman followed me into the hall I was shocked because I had not invited her she did not want my husband she wanted some eggs she kept on following me into my kitchen and then I went into the utility room and opened the fridge and there she was right behind me and was all over the fridge she was quite adamant I want them all and insisted to give me her phone no I said no need I have regular customers but she said ring me in 10 days I want as many you have I felt intimitated and was glad my husband was there

Font worry, Ice cone this twice before, gone up to the front door of a friend and realised at the last minute it was the wrong one.

ShowMeTheKittens · 12/05/2019 18:05
Hmm Did you then make a cup of tea? Or did you sit down for a bit?
catx1606 · 12/05/2019 18:08

Maybe he's picking up something he's bought online? I buy a lot off things off Facebook sales and I've walked up to the wrong house before because either the house numbers weren't clearly marked or I've realised I've got the wrong house. It happens

@TigerTooth

Lol-ing at your dd calling you a troll.

A troll on MN is someone who is perceived to be making shit up. A troll hunter is someone on MN who disbelieves a post and repeatedly tells the OP that they're a troll/making shit up.

MN doesn't like people making shit up nor do they like people telling people they're making shit up.

asdou · 12/05/2019 18:16

OP, if you're still reading, I second the local facebook group. Ours has lots of posts like that 'a guy came knocking on my door with some dodgy excuse, has anyone else seen similar in the area?'
Also an area with seemingly high crime levels.

Tinkerbell89 · 12/05/2019 18:17

Possible snooping and probably tried front door to see if they could gain entry. Good to keep your front door locked even if you're home to stop spontaneous burglars who try doors. If they get in they'll take what they can grab...car keys, handbag etc
Or they were just looking for the right house they're due to visit and went up to yours by mistake

mollpop · 12/05/2019 18:17

Seriously?! I understand you might suffer from anxiety, but seriously? You're getting worked up for no reason. Forget it and move on.

FelicisNox · 12/05/2019 18:19

So to clarify he didn't walk into your house at all because your front door was locked, he just walked into your garden and out again?

Not such a mystery and not interesting at all.

On the upside, I can recommend a good CCTV installer if you're in East Anglia Grin

asdou · 12/05/2019 18:22

@FelicisNox

Are you in the habit of walking into peoples' gardens and walking back out again?

ChipSandwich · 12/05/2019 18:23

A man just walked into my house...

But he didn't. You saw him walk out of your front gate.
I've lived in my house over 30 years and that sometimes happens.
Mistakes happen. If he'd walked INTO your house. that would be different. This is a non event.

ReanimatedSGB · 12/05/2019 18:23

Do you have any sign on your door saying that you don't want junk mail or cold callers? I am a leaflet distributor and I might walk up to a front door, see a No Junk Mail sign and walk away again without leaving a leaflet.

We had a car reverse right up our driveway the other morning before 9am and when I looked out, it was gone. Very strange. It seemed so confident when it was reversing in as well, we live on a farm track and our gate is tricky to reverse into with trees on either side, and getting the angle right is hard. People who aren't used to it normally struggle. I wish I knew who it had been. We get some people reversing in just to turn but not all the way up practically to the house, like that.

Cherry4weans · 12/05/2019 18:29

This ACTUALLY happened to me and he DID come into my house. But I'm not sure who was more mortified 😂 I was standing there ironing in my nightie, he looked baffled and asked for previous tenant by name. I just shook my head with a polite smile and he went on his way. What gets me is how calm and polite I was. I just hope that if he had ill intent I would have thrown the iron at him and not made him a cuppa.

Jellybeansincognito · 12/05/2019 18:30

Do you have any pets?

PortiaCastis · 12/05/2019 18:31

Glitterblue · 12/05/2019 18:31

I've just remembered one time when we were visiting friends for a BBQ, in their new house, which was in a terrace of identical houses on a courtyard. We were all in the back garden and I'd gone out the front door to get something from the car.... And couldn't remember which house it was!! I tried the door I thought and it was locked....thankfully, because I'd have walked into some stranger's house!!!!!

Justkeeprollingalong · 12/05/2019 18:32

But he didn't walk into your house

asdou · 12/05/2019 18:38

But he didn't walk into your house

I think we've established that already. But thanks for the invaluable input.

Itssosunny · 12/05/2019 18:42

Checking how easy it would be to break-in?

SadOtter · 12/05/2019 18:45

He was probably giving the door a push to see if it was locked, it was locked so you are all good.

One of my neighours had it a while back they thought they had heard someone, couldn't see anything and nothing obvious missing, so they decided they had imagined it. a few hours later they realised their car had gone, someone had slipped in, swiped the keys out the coat pocket in the hallway and helped themselves, presumably they had been watching to know which coat and which car.

Whatamesshaslunch · 12/05/2019 19:00

He’s your long lost son, who has spent years searching for you. He finally got up the courage to find you but bottled it at the front door.

Elderflower14 · 12/05/2019 19:08

Have told this story on here before... A few years ago I As watching Crimewatch Roadshow.. It was focusing on home security.
Programme finished and I wandered in to the hall. I looked out of the frosted glass in the front door and saw a man crossing the lawn and head for the side gate. I flung the door marched out on to the lawn and shouted really loudly.... "WHERE THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING?" "The man calmly turned round and said." Good morning, I'm here to read your electric meter! " Blush
The meter box is through the gate and on the side of the house!!
