A man just walked into my house...

I was upstairs, and went to open the window when I see a man walking out of my house (out of my front garden). I watched him from the window and he didn't go into anyone else's house, and left our street.

I thought it was really odd as he wasn't a Royal Mail postman or anything, but I went downstairs to check whether he had put anything through our letterbox. Nothing there. I opened the door to see if anything he had put in the letterbox had fallen out- again, nothing.

Can anyone think of a logical explanation (I have anxiety) or is this really dodgy?

Burglars will test doors, windows, garages and back gates. Yours weren't open, so congratulations, keep them locked.

There's been a spate not far from us of people nicking delivery parcels, so he could have been checking for parcels. Also motorbikes and pushbikes, if you have one chained up he might have been checking the locks. If those aren't secure enough then get them moved tonight until you do get them secure.

Placemarking for the punchline.

Meter reading?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/05/2019 20:02

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Perhaps he was a mature player of knock-a-door-a-run but he chickened out at the last minute?!

God, that takes me back....

Grin It could have been much worse, I suppose - he could have done a poo in a paper bag, left it on the doorstep, set it on fire and rung the bell before scarpering Grin

DointItForTheKids · 11/05/2019 20:09

That is very true!

pallisers · 11/05/2019 20:13

He possibly was chancing that the door would have been left unlocked. Our local police tell us this is quite common - someone will try a door and see if they get lucky. If someone came up my path, didn't ring the doorbell, didn't leave anything, I'd wonder why too. And if it was the house where my elderly grandparents lived alone in an area prone to burglaries, I'd be even more likely to question it. Not sure why the OP got such a hard time.

myrtleWilson · 11/05/2019 20:15

Am I the only one intrigued as to how the OP has retrospectively name changed then Grin

PoorAnnie · 11/05/2019 20:15

You reported this to the police! No wonder the police are overstretched. Utterly ridiculous.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 11/05/2019 20:21

I'm wearing black jeans and a hoody, I promise I'm not dodgy or up to anything nefarious I just look a bit suspect 😆😆
He may have been casing your house but he didn't get in, he may have got the wrong address, who knows.

Dyrne · 11/05/2019 20:38

myrtleWilson your post made me go back and check OPs name, but i’m not observant enough enough to remember what she was called initially!

What has she changed from?

KellyW88 · 11/05/2019 20:46

When I was pregnant with my twins I’d fallen asleep on the settee in my living room (I lived in a flat then) without meaning to, a random couple I have never seen before just waltzed in, no knock or anything at the front door, walked down the hallway and into the living room waking me up - in my half asleep state I just asked “who are you?” Rather confused and they made mumbled apologies and left - I think they’d gotten the wrong flat and it didn’t scare me or anything, they looked extremely embarrassed but I have to admit in that moment I about weed myself :’)

mouldyhousemouldylife · 11/05/2019 20:46

A man walked into your house.

Ended up being a man didn't even knock your front door.

Hysterical much

Hmm
whitehalleve · 11/05/2019 20:58

You're really making a drama out of nothing.

@myrtleWilson Ah yes of course; I thought only @MNHQ could change usernames retrospectively like that?

(I have vague memories they did it for the Penis Beaker poster as she hadn’t namechanged prior to the post! But also remember it being pretty extenuating circumstances as the post had gone so viral)

hiddenmnetter · 11/05/2019 22:00

Water meter reading? If the meter is external why bother disturbing the occupant? Take the reading and leave.

Redglitter · 11/05/2019 22:26

Lock the door. Get a spy-hole fitted. No-one should walk into your house without being invited

You might want to read past the OP of a thread before replying....

pallisers · 11/05/2019 22:33

The poster said she had anxiety and lives in an area where there were lots of burglaries and was hoping there was a logical explanation instead of the (to me fairly reasonable but anxiety-inducing) one of someone hoping the door was open.

Lots of unkind replies. I suppose it is AIBU - oh wait, no, it is chat.

Bunnybigears · 11/05/2019 22:35

I think the main problem was the blatant mistruth in the title.

AlexaAmbidextra · 11/05/2019 22:40

Is there a way of reporting this, without calling 101

Telepathy? Carrier pigeon?

pallisers · 11/05/2019 22:44

Really. the only thing that mattered was that she said walked into my house instead walked up to my house. That means she deserves to get replies like "there is something quite wrong with the OP" (well actually she does have anxiety - does that count as "wrong").

Whatever. people are having bantz with themselves - hilarious! - and knocking themselves out to show the OP how stupid she is. Who cares if this is a genuinely anxious person looking for reassurance.

myrtleWilson · 11/05/2019 22:54

And my post was deleted why? MNHQ retrospectively agreeing a name change on a thread isn't usual behaviour is it?
