A man just walked into my house...

I was upstairs, and went to open the window when I see a man walking out of my house (out of my front garden). I watched him from the window and he didn't go into anyone else's house, and left our street.

I thought it was really odd as he wasn't a Royal Mail postman or anything, but I went downstairs to check whether he had put anything through our letterbox. Nothing there. I opened the door to see if anything he had put in the letterbox had fallen out- again, nothing.

Can anyone think of a logical explanation (I have anxiety) or is this really dodgy?

Was it the ghost of Alvin Stardust?

@Elderflower14

I so want you to have been wielding a frying pan/rolling pin! Grin

clarissa1975 · 12/05/2019 19:13

May I ask if this was in or near Crawford? Only asking as something very similar happened to my cousin recently. Hope you're ok x

clarissa1975 · 12/05/2019 19:14

Sorry I meant cranford, stupid predictive text!

emmarose1611 · 12/05/2019 19:16

My dad was once doing some work to our house and needed to pop out to get his tools out the van. We lived in the middle of a long, pavement fronted row of terraces at the time.
Dad collected his chain saw and let himself back in. Except he got the wrong house and walked into my neighbours front room with it.
I think she put a post up on MN at the time asking people what they thought could have been happening too!

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/05/2019 19:24

Are you in the habit of walking into peoples' gardens and walking back out again?

Well, to be fair, it would be extremely fucking weird to walk into peoples' gardens and stay there forever.

MrsBadcrumble123 · 12/05/2019 19:25

If I was near a window watching someone walking in my front garden I’d be shouting ‘can I help you?’ out of the window! The fact you didn’t means you won’t ever know unless they come back!! Forget it and move on - unless the person is on Mumsnet and happens to give you the reason it’s oointless asking IMO Hmm

Bignosenobum · 12/05/2019 19:25

Ring the police.

CustardySergeant · 12/05/2019 19:31

Don't be ridiculous Bignosenobum

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/05/2019 19:34

No point ringing police he’s gone, there’s no immediate risk and a sketchy description

Elderflower14 · 12/05/2019 19:37

@FiremanKing. The funny thing is he was covering the whole village and I saw him three or four more times in various parts and he kept staring very beadily at me... Ha ha!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 12/05/2019 19:39

He'd got the wrong house.

If you say he looked undesirable then perhaps he was drunk or tipsy?

He could have been a door to door seller that perhaps was looking to target certain houses and yours was one he absent mindedly came to he wasn't supposed to target.
This is not as crazy as it sounds. We got some flier in the letterbox about UV covers or some such for conservatory windows and the only way you'd know we had one is if you'd looked through the front window unless you went round the lane at the back so they were targeting specific houses. It was a hard sell scam anyways as I looked it up.

Reading the meter is another good one.

One place we used to live we had someone walk through the garden gate, and pick up a £1 potted flower from B and Q and walk off with it. We noticed it as the gate was open that someone had been in and saw the flower that was by the door had gone.
Check none of your plants are missing especially any little ones that could easily be moved in case he came back later when you didn't see. Far fetched I know but still..!

VenusClapTrap · 12/05/2019 19:39

He’s your long lost son, who has spent years searching for you. He finally got up the courage to find you but bottled it at the front door.

This actually happened to someone I know.

Artbum · 12/05/2019 19:39

My DD was cat sitting, went to the wrong house and tried to open the door with the key. The actual house was a few doors down. She only realised when she rang a relative of the owner to say her key didn’t work.

I once found a friend of my daughters (when aged 5) with his Nanny walking up to doors on our street because he wanted to drop a note in and couldn’t remember the number or what our house looked like, except it had a black door (it was green).

Probably something silly like that.

AlphaJura · 12/05/2019 19:50

Maybe he was at a party at a similar house or street, had a few too many sherberts, left the house for whatever reason and on his return, went to the wrong house but then realised his error before he entered the house. I actually did this in my teens, but I walked into the wrong house! The door opened straight onto the kitchen. Imagine my surprise to return to the party after not very long to discover that the previously busy kitchen was now devoid of revellers, the music was off and the decor had totally changed! Blush. I realised my mistake and made a quick exit and managed to select the party house on my second attempt!

DJB33 · 12/05/2019 19:51

Probably got wrong address but didn’t realise it until he got to the door..

Maccy2018 · 12/05/2019 20:02

As disgusting as it is could he of walked into your garden had a wee & walked out again

jellyfish70 · 12/05/2019 20:05

So he didn't walk into your house, he waled up your path? I don't get what the panic is about. Maybe he rang the door, knocked the door and you didn't hear it? Maybe he realised he had the wrong address. Nothing happened OP!!!

Mothership4two · 12/05/2019 20:06

Have you got a dog?

We have had a lot of attempted dog-nappings in this area (a large area). One of the things they do is 'mark' a house of the dog they want with chalk and then someone will come back and try later. They leave some sort of chalk mark on the pavement or road outside or sometimes on the walls of the house or garden itself. If you have a dog, I would check.

Dillydallyer · 12/05/2019 20:07

@LipstickHandbagCoffee Not true, they can record it on their intel system. Wouldn’t dispatch but would make a record of it, especially if it’s a high crime area.

PleaseJustSayNo · 12/05/2019 20:31

I needed some advice...

Should actually then read:

I got lots but chose to igorw 90% of it as it didn't agree with my sensationalist intent

Whereistheglove · 12/05/2019 20:34

You were standing at the window, why didn’t you just open and shout out what are you doing or something?

JinglingHellsBells · 12/05/2019 20:39

LOL You are all talking into a void.
The OP disappeared days ago (well, yesterday) and hasn't been back. She said her farewells.

mrshousty · 12/05/2019 20:39

Dementia? Did you leave your door open?

PleaseJustSayNo · 12/05/2019 20:40

Well that's an epic fucking spelling mistake 🤦‍♂️

Ignore even
