Has anyone had their kids tutored for the 11+? How do you motivate them?

DH and I are looking into the distance and we need to start thinking about secondary school eventually. We've agreed to put our child in for the 11+ but we also realise that all the kids round here get tutored and we'd probably need to do that (super selective area). Our child is the type that needs to be motivated to do something. He's a tad lazy/pig headed! So how do you motivate a child to go to a tutor and do homework for it? Other than going to the open day and looking at the school we've not got any bright ideas!

Does he want to go to the grammar school? He'll need to be both academically able and hard-working to thrive at a super-selective, so if he isn't then it might be time to look at the other options.

We want him to go to grammar school because he's clever and he can get great results there. He isn't not motivated, it's just hard to get a young kid to appreciate the benefits of education and not whinge about going to a tutor every week. He doesn't know what grammar school is really.
