Would this be weird?

A house down the road has had some work done and we need the same type of work doing.

I don't know the people who live in this house.

Would it be weird to knock on their door and ask who did the work, are they happy with it, and roughly how much did it cost?

I know this is a daft question but I was brought up by a very weird mother who had very strange opinions on stuff like this so I'm never sure if I'm making a tosser of myself doing things like this.

Perfectly normal thing to do.

Waterandlemonjuice · 09/05/2019 10:19

No, not weird, I’d tell someone if they asked me.

DirtyDennis · 09/05/2019 10:23

Great, I thought it'd be fine but my mum's voice popped into my head making me doubt myself!

Thanks so much

I don't tend to like talking to random strangers or being approached (Nordic :p) but even I wouldn't find this weird or objectionable :) Go for it!

DirtyDennis · 09/05/2019 11:37

@Damntheman Grin I would, of course, apologise for disrupting their day/evening.

I wouldn't mind this at all.

TooTrusting · 09/05/2019 17:38

I wouldn't necessarily want to tell you what I paid but would have no issue telling you who did it and they could then quote. They may offer up the info anyway.

BlueMerchant · 09/05/2019 17:39

It's an obvious thing to do.

icelollycraving · 09/05/2019 18:38

I wouldn’t mind recommending someone but absolutely would not feel comfortable being asked by a stranger to see it or how much it cost.

DirtyDennis · 09/05/2019 18:45

@icelollycraving It's on the outside so I can see it anyway Grin

I don't understand not telling what you paid but I think this might be a British thing (wasn't brought up in a British culture). I wouldn't ask "what did you pay?" but something like "were you happy with the price?" Over time I've learnt to deal with the British opposition to revealing anything at all to do with money Grin

A couple of years sgo, a total random knocked on my door to ask who'd done my roof and was I ok with it. His son wanted his roof doing and he has seen mine was new.

I thought his was request was totally reasonable and I had no problem giving him my roofers details. It's normal, go for it

SrSteveOskowski · 09/05/2019 19:08

Yes, go for it. Your mother sounds like mine. Which is probably why I'll talk to absolutely anyone.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 09/05/2019 19:39

I wouldn't mind at all being asked. I'd be happy to pass on the details of the contractor but I wouldn't like being asked about the cost. I might volunteer that information to a friend but not a stranger.

KatyN · 09/05/2019 20:10

I asked a neighbour who did their new door. She gave me the name and said it was ‘reasonable’. This is British for the price was as you would expect for a new door but she was not disclosing how much it was.

I LoVE our Britishness about not talking money. And how much you can read into one word

DirtyDennis · 10/05/2019 09:18

I knocked on this morning but no-one was in!

@KatyN I LoVE our Britishness about not talking money. And how much you can read into one word It's taken me a while to figure this out. It's still baffling, especially around house prices because that information is all easily available on RightMove Hmm

I also see no issue with this. I have had some work done and someone came round to see it as they are also having the same done. They didn't ask cost, and I'm not sure I'd have told them if they did, but I was more than happy to show them and discuss the process etc.
