Does anyone else get anxiety about about going away on holiday and also while they are there?

Has anything helped you or have you got over it and how?

Yes but I thought I was just weird. Can't say I have any tips though, it's not so bad it stops me doing anything, I just feel really stressy.

Felipa · 08/05/2019 14:42

I get it really badly for the first 2-3 days before I relax into 'holiday mode'. I worry about leaving the house incase a fire, flood or burglary happens when we're away!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 08/05/2019 14:51

Me, I never look forward to going away. Always feel full of dread in the run up and secretly fantasise about what could happen so we wouldn't have to go. I'm fine once I'm there but I never want to go.

Oh gosh yes!! I'm terrible in the run up to the holiday, in then takes a couple of days of being there for me to feel settled. I do enjoy holidays but think I'm a bit of a homebody really

Loopytiles · 08/05/2019 14:58

Yes. V badly and much worse since DC. Even work travel within London or UK stresses me out.

Manage it by being organised, sharing organising etc with DH, setting aside time to pack etc.

And alcohol (within reason!) when flying and when I get there! Envy

JaneJeffer · 08/05/2019 15:01

Yes and I feel a bit homesick when it gets to bedtime each night. Always end up with a dodgy stomach from the anxiety.

thaegumathteth · 08/05/2019 15:04

Yes but not because I don’t want to do , it’s just that I want it to be perfect and that’s basically impossible

Bookaholic73 · 08/05/2019 15:07

Yes,I hate it.
I don’t know why, but I get really ill (upset stomach and migraines) before a holiday, just because I want to be at home.
It’s odd because I also want to be on holiday Confused

My reply on your other thread about this:

Yes, I do but I have anxiety disorder. Is your anxiety just about holidays or is it a bigger problem?

I am on medication anyway, so that helps. But other more practical things:

  1. I choose the accommodation myself and make sure i've seen pictures and read some reviews. This helps me feel I know whats coming. We only holiday in the UK because flying is too much anxiety for me.
  2. I take my own duvet, sort of like a comforter. It really helps me feel safer.
  3. I use other tools like meditation and guided imagery to relax. Usually once i've slept somewhere over night my anxiety reduces greatly and I can get on with the holiday.
mummymayhem18 · 08/05/2019 15:11

Yes I do. I don't go away now. My husband and daughter spent the Easter holidays in America. I have health conditions and with them bring a lot of anxiety especially since my health seems to have deteriorated further in the last 1-2 years which means my anxiety has gotten worse. I don't leave the house much apart from maybe to do some food shopping, drop parcels off etc. It's a horrible business isn't it but you certainly aren't alone ❤️

Iwantacookie · 08/05/2019 15:17

Yes this is me. I even started crying on the plane once because of it.
I'm fine after a couple of days and think I just need to get used to waking up somewhere else.
I may also have cried over missing the pets Blush

Shopperami · 08/05/2019 15:35

Thank you so much for everyone’s reply. I really appreciate it.

Does anyone get like it even for a few days away? It feels so silly.

Yes I do! I get very low and anxious before I go and very unsettled, once im there I am ok and have a nice time. I think it’s the unknown as it’s not the travelling as coming home I’m fine. I have a big once in a lifetime trip coming up and I’m already anxious.

sleepstealer · 08/05/2019 18:02

I do now I have DS. Before him going away whether it be one night or 2 weeks was so exciting, I looked forward to everything. DS is nearly 3 and we still go away approx 4 times a year and if we're going abroad I get more anxious. Mainly about the long days travelling there and back and worry about how shit DS will sleep while we're away as he's good at home but not usually in a new place.

I still love holidays, the change of scenery and family time is important but yes, I worry but we always have a good time.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 08/05/2019 18:05

Do you mean anxious? Or are you talking about anxiety as a bigger thing?

I find researching and booking holidays really stressful these days which is why we’ve gone back to the same (very lovely, to be fair) place so many times. I like that we know where everything is.

Nanamilly · 08/05/2019 18:10

Yes, even though I go on holiday about 4 times a year.

It’s just the way it is and I accept it’s more than likely not going to change given the age I am now. It doesn’t stop me enjoying my holidays though and I hope I’m traveling right up to the end of my days.

Shopperami · 08/05/2019 19:54

Weeping- I think I mean anxiety as a bigger thing Sad

I get stressed by the packing, thinking I'll forget something. Used to be really good at packing light following back packing, but this all changed after DCs. Even a short trip away brings stress.
Used to have anxiety while on hols, this has lessened now with mobile phones in that you're always in touch .

BearSoFair · 08/05/2019 20:10

Absolutely! It does sometimes stop me from booking things to be honest. If I know DH and DC will be coming I'm not so bad but if it's meant to be just me, going away with friends etc, I get really stressed about what might happen while I'm not there. Weirdly doesn't happen in reverse, if DH goes away and I'm home I don't worry about him then...

Handofglory · 08/05/2019 20:10

Yes-I get very stressed about packing, worrying I will forget something and have to waste money replacing it.
I can actually pack really easily for myself but I really worry about getting things right for the kids.
Uk holidays are the worst because I never know what weather to pack for

Shopperami · 08/05/2019 21:38

So mostly everyone is ok after they have settled in?

I can’t even do that Sad

Anyone else?

OP posts:
vampirethriller · 09/05/2019 08:40

I get really stressed when I'm packing and then when I'm travelling to the airport I really want to go home! I'm ok when I'm actually on the way though.
