What would be a decent generic red wine to take to a dinner party?

I don't drink red wine and know nothing about it, however I know the hosts prefer red wine to white and rose.
I'd like to take a decent bottle along. Any tips on what type is usually nice? Or a point in the right direction of a country would be fab!

I got on to the Aldi website and search by 'top rated' or whatever and buy the six top ones. Not had a dud bottle yet and it's free p&p over a certain amount

This is a really good drinkable and reasonably priced red from Portugal. Only available in Majestic it's one pf their best selling reds and comes highly rated.
