My brother-in-law turns 70 soon. He is the most thoughtful and generous person, always out to help others. We are having a meal for him for his birthday but Im stuck on what to get him.

Loves fishing and goes every few weeks, also loves Monty Don.

Any ideas?

Tickets to Gardeners World Live? Or really nice gardening tools (Monty uses Tobisho SR1 secateurs).

A Panama hat to wear in the garden.

A bird bath/sun dial/garden seat/sun umbrella.

National Trust membership.

Gardening magazine subscription.

Picnic plates/glasses/lamp etc for dinner in his garden.

He has a sundial and bird bath and they also have NT membership. A rose tree linked to his name would be nice but Im struggling

where does he live? A fly fishing lesson on a good river maybe? (unless he fly fishes already)

Felco secateurs - they are the Rolls Royce of secateurs.

RHS membership and/or Chelsea Flower Show tickets. Or other shows nearer to you.

There might be a rose linked to the number 70. I know they do them for 40 and 50 wedding anniversaries, but they might do other numbers too.

How about a wildlife camera? They're motion activated and record at night too.

Bought one for my parents 50th anniversary and they love it.

Monty Don is talking at the Hay on Wye festival at the end of may (not sure if your BIL lives anywhere near - think there are tickets still available)

I'm 60 and also like gardening and crosswords - I'd appreciate a special shrub for the garden, nice gardening tools, bird boxes, bird table, bat box, hedgehog box, insect boxes, binoculars, a decent cold frame, nice pottery tubs, giant book of cryptic crosswords (Times do a giant one), good wellies, any books on gardening (am sure Monty has written a few), specialist seeds of unusual plants (RHS do some - you can get them from kew gardens online) - or if you want to go jokey - a fishing gnome Grin !

RaptorWhiskers · 07/05/2019 23:23

Not sure where you looked OP but there are still tickets to see Monty at GW Live at 4.30pm on Thursday?

Overseasmom100 · 09/05/2019 09:22

Gardners World - yes tickets for 4.30pm showing but only if you buy a VIP ticket £99 - standard premier tickets which is the next ticket isnt showing
