Had a niggling soreness since Saturday, I think triggered as I had an unusually heavy period and have been using a mooncup which I've had issues with the fit, it kept slipping and we were away so lots of walking around not being able to stop for the loo when I needed to, anyway so got a bit sore, then burning when weeing, 4 days now. Have been to the gp, saw perscribing nurse, he dipped urine, said there was blood but this was down to period (finished by sunday) but nothing else.
Sent it to the lab, told me to call Thursday and he can percribe anti biotics if needed.
Thing is I just feel really run down, weeing is like peeing glass, even lying down/sitting hurts, it's agony. I've not had this in years so not sure if it's all normal! I did used to get utis quite badly in my 20s, couple of times I ended up in a and E as it went to kidneys. I'm at home today as its my day off but I should be working, all I'm dijng is lying here whist my 4 Yr old watches TV, couldn't face sitting at my laptop..
I've got a really busy few days ahead at work, (teaching) can't see how I'm going to get through days of teaching, meetings, extra revision classes feeling like this when sometimes it'll be 3hrs plus before I can get to the loo, sometimes all day from 8 till 4pm I don't get chance.
What can I try? Paracetamol and water is what the nurse suggested. I felt like asking him if he'd pee'd much glass before but I restrained myself..

I really feel your pain. I had this a couple of months ago and it was unbearable.
Is there anyway you could take another sample in to the doctors this afternoon?

AlunWynsKnee · 07/05/2019 13:48

Ibuprofen and lots of water. You might be a bit bruised from the mooncup. If you've got bicarb put some of that in a glass of water and drink it or get a sachet of cystitis remedy from the pharmacy.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 07/05/2019 13:52

I've always been getting them, awful I know. Didn't think it was possible but last time it happened I actually cured myself based on something I read online! (Normally I need antibiotics, I view the cranberry juice thing as an old wives tale, each to their own, just never worked for me.)
What worked: I got concentrated lemon juice, the green bottles. Mixed wn a pint of water, as much lemon juice as I could stand. Lots! Drank two of thise pints, then didn't pee until I was bursting. Held it in for as long as humanly possible, then some. Then I peed like a horse, made sure I really emptied the bladder. Then same procedure again twice that day. Plus anti inflammatory painkillers. In the evening I was fine!

When did you see the doctor?

Get some cystitis sachets from the chemist, chase the results and/or ask for another urinalysis.

Vitalogy · 07/05/2019 13:54

That sounds awful OP.
Drink water like it's going out of fashion. Swill yourself out.
When you get back to work you need to start taking care of yourself. Make it a priority to go to the toilet. The other things will have to wait. It takes a few minutes to go to the toilet.

Hope you get some relief soon!

Vitalogy · 07/05/2019 13:56

Ps, Also don't rush when actually weeing. Wait a bit when you finish, there's usually a few more drops to come out.

Catlady173 · 07/05/2019 13:56

Lots and lots of cranberry juice, it soothes the urinary tract. No OJ or anything acidic ,
The more you pee it flushes out the inflamation.
I was constantly getting cystitis 5-6 yrs ago, peeing pure blood as tract was so inflamed, ended up getting surgery to stretch urethra, it was so narrow, the slightest inflamation caused sides to rub together and cause irritation. Nothing more painful than constantly needing to go then peeing razor blades . Try the cranberry along with cystitis sachets, even Asda's ones work and half the price of pharmacy's

GoAndAskDaddy · 07/05/2019 13:59

Google something called d mannose..... I have found this really helpful. Bought it from Amazon.

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 07/05/2019 14:04

Thanks all, I have the sachets, have had a few over the weekend, 1 more today, will have another now. I can't really get back to the doc, got to do school run in a bit, not sure it would make a difference. Saw them this morning, I'd been drinking loads though so maybe it was diluted? Feel a bit like I've got a cold coming, bit achy, got a rash on my neck which happens when I'm run down, scratchy throat, maybe that's why I feel rough. The thought of drinking lemon juice makes me want to cry but maybe I'll give it a go 🍋😢
Im awful about getting to the loo, I know. Years of working in a school with 1 ladies loo, barely any breaks, sometimes it can be 4 hrs teaching plus duty at break and tutor group, so don't go from leaving home at 7am till 1.30..i might be able to get someone to sit with my classes tomorrow if I need to go.
Going to take ibuprofen now, had paracetamol already. I'll call them Thursday to harass if it's still bad. I think I'm worried as the kidney infection I had was odd in that I felt awful, then loads better, then suddenly just got really ill really quickly and ended up on a drip. Felt amazing once that kicked in though!

Get cranberry tablets - chemist should stock them. I have a similar issue the past couple of days, also period related. As soon as I felt the sting I started the tablets and am much better now.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 07/05/2019 14:19

I see people are advising against the lemon juice and I totally get that it may not be the best for everyone, but in my case (and I was desperate) it worked really well. It was also the holding-it-in and then really emptying my bladder properly that helped imo, ie I flushing out the bacteria. Should add this was day 1 of symptomps. I've tried everything else before and never nipped it in the bud like that. Was delighted!

spiderlight · 07/05/2019 14:20

D-mannose has really helped me - it's the particular sugar from cranberries that binds to bacteria in the urine and helps the body to flush them out, but without the sugar/acid of cranberry juice, which can irritate the bladder more. I've suffered dreadfully with cystitis for years but have only had one very minor attack since I started taking a d-mannose capsule daily.

In the short term, get some Cystopurin sachets if you can. I find it vastly more effective than any of the other OTC cystitis remedies. You have my sympathies - there are few things more miserable than a proper bad UTI :(

Shmithecat2 · 07/05/2019 14:21

Potassium Citrate from the chemist. Tastes like shit but really helps!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 07/05/2019 14:24

I have the sachets, have had a few over the weekend, 1 more today, will have another now

The Sachets are a course and you need to take the full course, they will not work if you just take them as and when. There is 6 in a pack and you need to take 3 per day for 2 days.

jade9390 · 07/05/2019 14:28

I would not try the moon cup again, foreign bodies are the cause. Dr is slow, he should have given you something as this would have gone by now in most cases, get any of the sachets which the chemist suggests, they work. Paracetomol does not touch this. Wear pads or incontinence knickers as it is always a few drops which seep out.

hayley013 · 07/05/2019 14:39

A hot water bottle between your legs always gives me some well needed temp relief. Paracetamol, LOTS of water and the cystitis sachets. If it's any worse or same tomorrow I'd go back x

NoTheresa · 07/05/2019 14:58

I would be inclined to make another appointment with a GP asap. This can develop in a very nasty way if not treated with antibiotics. It is possible to get sepsis.

Seriously, do not delay.

NoTheresa · 07/05/2019 14:59

I know because I have been in this position.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 07/05/2019 15:37

I have a broken bladder and get lots of these. When the antibiotics take a while to work I take these. I have them all the time in my house and never go anywhere without them. They work within half an hour. Takes away all symptoms. Best things ever invented.

groundcontroltomontydon · 07/05/2019 15:40

You can get a 3-day course of macrobid via superdrug's online doctor (you have to fill in a questionnaire, respond to any additional questions, and pay). Collect in store. It's a great service.

RedSheep73 · 07/05/2019 15:42

Drink masses of water - not just the odd glass, but pints at a time. More than you'd think possible. It'll come straight back out but it'll hurt less. And call the doctor back, they can put you on antibiotics if it's not clearing up without having to do a urine test, I'm positive.

Raga1 · 07/05/2019 16:25

Teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water, tastes vile, you can get it in any supermarket, big glass of water after it, usually takes the sting out by the next pee, I went through a stage of this and its horrendous, you have my sympathies

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 07/05/2019 17:23

Thanks all. I didnt take a full course of the sachets over the Weeke d as we were away and I couldn't get to a pharmacy, I found some tucked awa in the back of a cupboard when we got back though and had 2 yesterday, 3 today from a box I bought this morning, so I'll have the last 3 tomorrow and hope it's abated by the end of tomorrow. I've had loads of water, peeing feels a little better now. Going to have more paracetamol later and hope I sleep well and feel better tomorrow.. Will also try some of the other suggestions for future, hopefully there aren't any...

OP if you continue to feel unwell and it's not getting better, especially if you start to get feverish or sick, I would go to A&E. I had cystitis a few years back that spread to my kidneys and led to sepsis over the course of a week. I'd been to the GP and had been given ineffective (cheap) antibiotics which didn't work. I needed intravenous antibiotics in the end as it had gotten so bad. I'm aware this was an extreme case but cystitis can become very serious if not treated (and if home remedies don't start to work, I'd say within a couple of days).

Doyoumind · 07/05/2019 18:28

Cystitis is the worst. I have had it a lot. Cranberry juice has actually been proven not to work but yes to plenty of water. Sitting and weeing in the bath too. It's gross but it can help if the stinging gets really bad. I would also be worried if you don't look after yourself it will go up to your kidneys.
