What happens to your tax credits if you have a one month gap without a job or pay - are you automatically migrated to universal credit?

Is my question basically .

I have the option of leaving my school based job at the end of July and looking for a job that starts in September. Or staying in my current job until the end of December and hopefully finding work for the beginning of January. In some ways I prefer the first scenario, but am worried that having the August with no job or pay will mean automatically being transferred to universal credit?

Is this the case? Thanks a lot .
