Best food from America?

Hoping MN can help me out here. DP is coming to the UK next week and wants to bring me some things.

Which treats and savoury things have you enjoyed the most or can you get most things here now?

(Actually I can't, I'm in the Highlands. It's a tiny Tesco)

Grape jelly? Kraft Macaroni and Cheese?
My mind has gone blank 😶

Thanks in advance.

Peanut butter M&Ms. You can get them here but they’re hella expensive.

pallisers · 06/05/2019 23:41

I live in the US and can't really think of anything from the supermarket shelves that I would bring across the atlantic tbh. Some of the local stuff is amazing but you can't take fresh corn or locally grown tomatoes or fab proscutto from the italian deli through customs. The kids seem to like some of the candy - especially sour patch candies. People also talk about hershey's kisses (don't get that myself). Proper maple syrup would be nice.

dreichuplands · 06/05/2019 23:44

I agree I think candy is your best bet.
Kraft mac is really disgusting.
Alcoholic root beer is a favorite of dh but not easy to transport.

Rosalisa · 06/05/2019 23:56

I like the sound of the sour candies thank you and do get what you mean about local fresh food.
He made pickle soup the other day and it looked incredible but that won't work 😁

agree about the kraft mac not being good - it is the taste of childhood for many americans (like oxtail soup from a packet is a taste of childhood for me) but it really isn't good (Annies mac and cheese is marginally better) - my kids would dread getting it at playdates that included dinner.

KondoKonvert · 07/05/2019 00:07

There's no proper equivalent here for Graham crackers for s'mores!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 07/05/2019 00:10

Mccormicks gravy mix. It's like a creamy pepper sauce and is just soooo good.

My friend brought me a load of flavoured
coffee creamers over but not sure if that was strictly legal. They are very nice though.

Rtmhwales · 07/05/2019 00:13

My Welsh friends always have me bring them jolly ranchers.

Kummerspeck · 07/05/2019 00:16

Skippy or JIF natural peanut butter, bloody gorgeous!

Ranch Dressing powder (you mix it with mayo and milk to make garlic ranch dressing)

Not food but melatonin tablets are useful and cannot be bought here

Backwoodsgirl · 07/05/2019 00:24

You could make some proper American meals like poutine, or sausage biscuits and gravy?

Katinski · 07/05/2019 00:25

I bring back tubs of Kernel Season's cheesy jalapeno shake over popcorn seasoning.Buy them at Wholefoods.
I second melatonin tablets..

dellacucina · 07/05/2019 00:28

Junior Mints

Funfetti frosting and cake mix

Hershey's bars

Slim Jims

Velveeta (very specialised ingredient but I'm not sure what your relationship is to the US)

pallisers · 07/05/2019 00:31

velveeta is often recommended for making a smooth queso or dip but I can still taste the chemicals in it so use other less processed cheeses instead.

NotWeavingButDarning · 07/05/2019 00:36

My DP always brings me Tim Horton's coffee.

dreichuplands · 07/05/2019 00:40

We are driving to Canada and DH has promised me Tim Hortons when we get there.

lastqueenofscotland · 07/05/2019 00:41

Kraft Mac is fucking horrific.

Hersey’s do a bar with like... crunchy stuff in it. I want to say it’s called kraken but probably not, comes with a red wrapper. It’s lovely

dellacucina · 07/05/2019 00:43

Krackel. Mr Goodbar is also great. Both come in the bag of Hershey's Minis that is sold in every drug store!

dellacucina · 07/05/2019 00:45

The best thing to do with Velveeta is to use it as one cheese in a multi-cheese mac and cheese, particularly with cheddar. It gives a nice smooth texture without the need for a white sauce . There will be loads of recipes online.

HeddaGarbled · 07/05/2019 00:45

Fruit Loops

dellacucina · 07/05/2019 00:50

Jello pudding is also good. I particularly suggest pistachio (though you would normally use this as am ingredient in some very American dessert using other ingredients that won't travel well), vanilla, or chocolate. It is a pleasant dessert, sort of like custard, and can be used to make nice ice lollies.

dellacucina · 07/05/2019 00:52

Sorry, and butterscotch. On that note, butterscotch chips taste artificial, but they are very good in cookies/blondies. You also might like Nestle chocolate chips if you want to make authentic American chocolate chip cookies.

LinoleumBlownapart · 07/05/2019 00:52

My kids sent swedish fish and sour patch kids to my friend's kids recently.
Mexican things are good. Proper dips for tortillas, that kind of thing.

Rosalisa · 07/05/2019 01:24

This is great advice, thank you ☺
