Best food from America?

Hoping MN can help me out here. DP is coming to the UK next week and wants to bring me some things.

Which treats and savoury things have you enjoyed the most or can you get most things here now?

(Actually I can't, I'm in the Highlands. It's a tiny Tesco)

Grape jelly? Kraft Macaroni and Cheese?
My mind has gone blank 😶

Thanks in advance.

I love root beer but think Iminthe minority.

Also peanut butter M&Ms... In fact all the M&Ms are far nicer (more addictive) in the States but I think that's because they've all all the E numbers we banned in them. Nice though Grin

I am finding this thread useful for ideas of food I haven't tried yet.
Making a note to look for dried ranch dressing for example.

Thegreymethod · 07/05/2019 17:29

@CrispbuttyNo1 great shout for the gravy mix!! We have American family and sausage biscuits and gravy is my absolute favourite!! We have it stock piled!
My kids go crazy for the American candy pretzel M&Ms are really good and not seen them in the UK also Cheetos the cheesy kind not the rubbish flaming hot they sell in B&M that are really just wotsits (they do sell Cheetos here but I've only seen them in a couple of random shops)

GingerRogers84 · 07/05/2019 19:31

Chewy caramel M&Ms in a party size bag! 😍

notsomumsymum · 07/05/2019 19:36

Flamin’ hot Cheetos!

Overthewall · 07/05/2019 19:44

DD is fresh from a trip to the US and put on about a stone eating Little Debbie’s brownies!

Walkthroughthefire · 07/05/2019 20:27

@dellacucina, my parents bought it in Canada so I assume soSmile

val4 · 07/05/2019 20:31

8 o'clock coffee....especially hazelnut and vanilla flavours!

Mustbetimeforachange · 07/05/2019 20:55

When I was a child my mum used to make dip with a sort of dried mix & sour cream. I guess it was ranch-like just not called that. It was delicious but I haven't seen it in the UK for years.
While we are on US foods, can someone tell me what canned tomato sauce is. Is it the same as pasatta?

mathanxiety · 07/05/2019 20:55

Alka Seltzer cold remedy. It knocks a cold out on day one.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 07/05/2019 21:01

Mr and Mrs T tomato juice. It might be a cocktail mixer. It's non alcoholic but is delicious.

LittleMy77 · 07/05/2019 22:12

mustbe yep, same as passata but usually with added sugar (like a lot of the tinned stuff here)

dreichuplands · 07/05/2019 22:38

The Costco one was unbearably salty.

Poddingtonp · 07/05/2019 22:41

I like a good trail Mix

woodcutbirds · 07/05/2019 22:49

Blue-black corn chips and white corn chips. So much nicer than the yellow Dorito-style ones we get in UK.

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 07/05/2019 23:07

Sorry for slight hijack BlushBlushBlush

Please could MNetters who live in Canada go to their local TIM HORTONS and take a photo or several photos of the variety of doughnuts and baked goods on offer?

Maybe also the list of their names or the names on the shelves please?

SmileSmileSmileSmile

I have looked online and they seem to have stopped some of my favourite ones like the brick shaped one that was chocolate and walnut crunch or something like that

It along with others were my very guilty pleasure a long time ago

mathanxiety · 08/05/2019 04:06

Mustbetimeforachange
Canned tomato sauce is tomato sauce that has the consistency of a slightly watery marinara sauce, which you would use in cooking.

It is unseasoned (though usually with salt added but you can buy unsalted) and imo a bit silly to buy it when you could buy a can of crushed tomatoes instead, or even a 6 oz can of tomato paste and dilute to taste.

mathanxiety · 08/05/2019 04:06

It's less thick than passata ime.

sam221 · 08/05/2019 04:43

I can't remember the exact name but I think they were call 'Oh Henry' bar-lovely and chewy.

mathanxiety · 08/05/2019 05:21

Oh Henry is indeed a great bar.

In the same vein, may I suggest the Take Five.

If in Pennsylvania, the Mallo Cup is unequalled.

dreichuplands · 08/05/2019 13:08

math I picked my pack of tomato sauce thinking it was chopped tomatoes. Now I am stuck with tins of the mouth puckering salty stuff.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/05/2019 13:23

Sugar and chemicals. Just about sums up American food

It really doesn't have to, you know. Certainly there's a lot of rubbish sold there, but nobody's forced to exist on that and the vast choice of good, fresh stuff is second to none

Also agree about pharmacy stuff, BTW - it's hardly the "treats" OP mentioned, but worth getting stuff which would need a GP appointment in the UK. And Naproxen's available in Dollar Tree everywhere ...

MaiaRindell · 08/05/2019 13:30

I always bring back Old Bay Seasoning, Pumpkin Pie Spice, peanut M&Ms, individual pots of peanut butter (Jig To Go), large packs of coconut and Pam baking spray with flour. I also but Ziploc snack bags.
God, I sound dull.

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 08/05/2019 18:15

Yes ZIP LOCK bags are much better than here

Obviously bad for environment but otherwise much much stronger and substantial

We use them as document holders rather than food bags - weird I know but for passports, tickets, boarding passes and driving docs they are great

Then at home in the filing cabinet, you can see what is inside so they are great in there too

Mominatrix · 08/05/2019 18:20

I swear by ZipLock bags - they are great for jumper storage to protect against moths. I reuse mine by washing and drying them thoroughly between uses.

You can find them here at Costco.
