Why is it so bloody cold?

It's May for goodness sake. We've just lit the fire and put the heating on. I'm still wearing my winter coat outside. Usually I don't feel the cold, and will happily wear a light jacket on cooler days from April onwards. Getting sick of it now.

I'm sitting in the garden wearing a tshirt. It's a bit cloudy but not cold. I'm in Somerset. I'll pop a light cardi on when we go out later.

This time last year I was swanning around Northumberland and Lindisfarne in a convertible car and getting my face burnt.

We've had some warmer than average Mays recently, so this weekends colder than average weather contrasts with this quite significantly. Especially after the heat over Easter.

But why? Jet stream is meandering in a big loop, and we are on the cold side of it. The present position of the low in the photo is steering the winds from the NW for many of us. It should warm up as we go through this week.

Cast ne'er a clout 'til May is out!

My mum said that earlier today! I’ve never heard it before.

I got married mid June almost 39 years ago and it was very cold

ThatSnailOnYourFrontStep · 06/05/2019 15:12

Actually I've just remembered my cousin's wedding, eight years ago, at which I was a bridesmaid. It was mid May. An hour standing outside a stately home in a frock, and I was blue. The barman gave me a hot whisky when I eventually escaped inside.

Because it's the UK

May chills. It's why you never plant out your courgettes until June. We lost several squash-type plants to sudden chilling and strong winds (and occasionally even frost) until we clued up.

I'm in Stockholm ATM and it's even colder here. Snowing just the other day!

UK weather was fantastic all over Easter though - we were on the beach in Dorset and it was roasting. Swings and roundabouts.....
