Passport advice please

Posting in chat for traffic.

My DP's ex is applying for a first passport for their DD and has asked for his passport number for the application.
No problems there except we can't find his passport anywhere!
It has expired anyway.
Will she need the number if it's not valid anymore?

Does she have a passport number to put on it? The passport number is used to prove the person is a British citizen so they can pass on their citizenship to the child. She could just put a note in the notes section that the number isn't available

The ex is applying for her first passport at this time too. Thanks for the advice, I'll suggest she does this.
