What would it take for you to become vegan?

A genuine question after a conversation some friends and I were having. They said that they'd become vegan if the ready meals and prepackaged vegan meals were cheaper. It got me thinking, are there any conditions under which you would consider veganism and if so, what are they?

Thanks @Oliversmumsarmy, will be looking for that!

I've recently had to give my (vegetarian) diet an overhaul following blood tests. I've cut out a lot of carbs and dairy and found it surprisingly easy. So although I'm not going all out vegan, I think I could definitely do it if I had to. For me it would be due to personal health reasons rather than any higher moral imperative.

UnPocoLoco2 · 08/05/2019 10:25

I quite like some dairy- proper butter, and yoghurt are great, plus homemade ice cream. I also have some dairy based cookbooks

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/05/2019 10:31

Myimaginarycathasfleas it is the brand that normally has a black top to it. Vita life or something like that.

I miss cheese and have only found one brand I like. Most of the rest is disgusting.

This “Greek white cheese” isn’t a crumbly version though It is smooth with a strong cheesy after taste.
I do miss the really smelly cheeses but unfortunately they bring on my eczema and psoriasis

I tried it for a while. Nothing on earth would make me do it again. It was awkward, restrictive, antisocial and it made normally delicous things like veg chilis, lentils and hummus humdrum and monotonous.

Athousandstars04 · 08/05/2019 10:39

Everyone saying they can't cause of cheese, bacon, eggs why can't you stop eating other non vegan food but still consume them? You're still helping the environment and the animals by cutting bits out!
And meat is very expensive compared to vegan food. What is expensive are vegan alternatives which no one is forcing you to buy! You can be perfectly healthy and fed on a vegan diet.
I watched a documentary called Earthlings which is absolutely horrific and I can't continue to eat animal products now I know what happens to them.
Humans believe their appetite is worth more than animals lives.

DulcieRay · 08/05/2019 10:39

I would not go vegan. Ever.

SoundofSilence · 08/05/2019 10:46

If someone with the knowledge and skills was cooking it for me, it tasted good and it wouldn't worsen my low bone density. I feel guilty about my meat and dairy consumption but wouldn't know where to start and I am already the only person that eats any vegetarian food I might cook (except macaroni cheese). The rest of the family would be downright hostile to giving up meat and dairy.

SilentSister · 08/05/2019 10:51

Undoubtedly it does happen to some, but not all. These documentaries are made by interested parties with an agenda against animal production. They always focus on the worst, with no counter balance to the best, and that, therefore is propaganda.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/05/2019 10:54

I did quite easily give up meat as I really didn’t like it.

Never could get my head around bacon and why everyone thinks it is so great.

Used to go round to a friends who liked to do roast dinners during the week.

Roast beef cooking smelled like a dead body warming up.

Everyone around me would say how great the smell was.

I was outside trying to get away from the odour

UnPocoLoco2 · 08/05/2019 10:58

Despite what vegans tell you. Dairy is the best and easiest way to get your calcium and vitamin D. I certainly don't want osteoporosis. It's in my family.

octonoughtcake3 · 08/05/2019 11:13

UnPocoLoco2 so you have any research on that? My child is dairy free due to allergy and her NHS dietician says there are lots of other easy ways to get calcium and there is no differences in the quality of calcium she is consuming.

teyem · 08/05/2019 11:17

Actually, you couldn't pay me to be a vegan, but I'm pretty sure that, although there is a lot of calcium is dairy products, most of it is not bio-available to outlet bodies and that green leafy veg is the way to go to avoid calcium deficiency.

teyem · 08/05/2019 11:18

Outlet = our. Not sure how I did that ? Confused

Downunderduchess · 08/05/2019 11:23

I'm vegan. If slaughterhouses had glass walls and you could see the barbaric practices that go on, an awful lot of people would become vegetarians overnight. Animals are sentient beings. They feel pain, fear, happiness etc. Why is it ok to eat some animals but not your pets?

BertrandRussell · 08/05/2019 11:23

“Dairy is the best and easiest way to get your calcium and vitamin D”

Not true. It is one way. There are plenty of others.

MephistophelesApprentice · 08/05/2019 11:28

If I could be guaranteed that my body and those of my descendants would retain the capacity to digest meat, then maybe. I'm not closing off a nutritional avenue because of a passing moral fad that only exists due to a fragile and ephemeral social system.

And there are the spiritual reasons, too. As I told my vegan friend when they asked me why I wouldn't go vegan, 'my body is a temple, and the dark gods within demand sacrifice.'

Purplehammer · 08/05/2019 11:39

I would if I could be certain it wouldn’t turn me into a judgemental, preaching arsehole.
I know several people who were quite pleasant and friendly before becoming vegan.

UnPocoLoco2 · 08/05/2019 11:43

@BertrandRussell yes there are other ways but dairy is the easiest way for the body to absorb calcium and vitamin D. Just like its easier to absorb iron from read meat than say green veg and nuts

Athousandstars04 · 08/05/2019 11:46

Dairy milk actually depletes bones, probably why osteopathic problems run through families cause you're all drinking cows milk!

Not all vegans are preachy, we're just passionate and we actually care about what is happening to the planet that our children are growing up on. Everyone is switching to paper straws to save the fish but no one is willing to stop eating the fish 🙃

Another thing for me was teaching my son that he has to be gentle with our dog but it's perfectly ok to pay someone to kill a chicken for us to eat. Hypocrisy at its finest.

There's no propaganda about it. Organic, grass fed, free range, farmers beating the animals, farmers not beating the animals.. they all end up killed.

BertrandRussell · 08/05/2019 11:50

“I would if I could be certain it wouldn’t turn me into a judgemental, preaching arsehole.”

Looking at this thread, plenty of people can be that without being vegans....

Oblomov19 · 08/05/2019 12:00

No. I don't mind eating vegan from time to time. 2 of my closest friends are. My not permanently, for me.

notso · 08/05/2019 12:15

The invention of cheese, butter and cream that taste exactly like the dairy version. Exactly the same, not just similar. I've tried several vegan cheeses and each one has been vile, I couldn't even swallow them.

DS would have to be cured of his nut/peanut allergy too.

UnPocoLoco2 · 08/05/2019 12:18

@Athousandstars04 but the fish 🐠 is so tasty 😋

UnPocoLoco2 · 08/05/2019 12:56

Especially with either bbq sauce or a coating of white miso.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/05/2019 21:43

I am a vegetarian and I couldn’t agree with you more.
Only one cheese brand I have found is any good. Not all there products but some are fine and one is absolutely fantastic.

Ds bought a supermarkets own brand vegan cheese yesterday. He opened it and threw it in the bin the smell was horrendous. We had to take the bin outside because the smell was so awful.
