What would it take for you to become vegan?

A genuine question after a conversation some friends and I were having. They said that they'd become vegan if the ready meals and prepackaged vegan meals were cheaper. It got me thinking, are there any conditions under which you would consider veganism and if so, what are they?

OP posts:

I have no issues with vegan food... if it tastes good I’ll eat it, I just really love my meat. Nothing in the world will change my opinion... I love meat and I love dairy... could Not go without cheese.
Saw something earlier that made me chuckle ‘remember Noah saved bacon and beef not lettuce and cauliflour 😂😂

TrickyKid · 05/05/2019 22:26

If I was a better cook or someone would make all my meals and ensure I got all the nutrients I needed. I'd like to be vegan but will stick with being veggie for now.

Butteredghost · 05/05/2019 22:46

For me, the food not being available to buy. I cannot justify my diet morally and I offer no excuses, but that's probably the bottom line.

As for what your friends said OP, I think that's easy to say but they probably wouldn't do it. It's like how a lot of people say they are overweight because they "can't afford" healthy food and they would definitely eat healthy if only it were cheaper. But if you see what they eat, it's a lot of expensive junk like chocolate bars, packets of chips and take aways. Healthy food (even convenience healthier food) is much cheaper. Or even just eating less of it would be cheaper. They are kidding themselves.

If the zombie apocalypse happened and ALL meat was contaminated I’d consider it.

Nah wait. I’d be a veggie

bellinisurge · 05/05/2019 22:49

It would take lack of availability of meat, dairy etc.

LilBoaty · 05/05/2019 22:52

I'd never become a vegan. I'm happy to kill animals to eat and have worked in an abattoir as a meat inspector (a long time ago!) and I've killed pigs, sheep and cows. As long as the animals are killed humanely then I have no qualms about eating them.
I only eat a little meat or fish though. Maybe 100g a day. I'ts a small
quantity but I'd really miss it if I didn't have it. I'd also miss all the other animal
Products that I eat.

Merename · 05/05/2019 22:52

I would need to get rid of my kids! We are all veggie and morally DH and I would like to be vegan, but the kids love eggs and cheese. We could give these up but I wouldn’t expect the kids to and I’m not making more than one meal.

Macandcheese05 · 05/05/2019 23:00

for bacon and chicken to be declared plants.

Sizeofalentil · 05/05/2019 23:25

I go vegan Jan-Easter most years, but wouldn't do it full-time as I really enjoy certain animal-based foods. For me, food is a major pleasure and I don't want to deny myself, in all honesty.

I don't think that I could ever go vegan in entirety, but would like to eat a mainly vegan diet supplemented with eggs from our own chickens and with the freedom to break it on occasion.

  • all commercial crops would have to be grown in a permaculture manner
  • funding from now until infinity would need to be found to support the grazing animals that conservation relies on
  • plans and funding would need to be in place for the final generation of livestock born to be looked after until they die
  • pets would need to be outlawed
  • someone would have to come up with a diet plan for me that didnt worsen my insulin resistance.
  • someone would need to give me a different job
outvoid · 05/05/2019 23:47

I was vegan for a couple of years, I’ve been a vegetarian for 15ish years.

During my vegan years I struggled with eating out, most restaurants only had plain pasta or chips and salad as an option! I also struggled with the lack of cheese because cheese is definitely one of my favourite foods and vegan cheese tastes like cold sick. Likewise found vegan alternatives super expensive (chocolate in particular).

It isn’t very convenient, you have to be wholly dedicated to do it and be happy about it.

Nat6999 · 05/05/2019 23:56

Hell to freeze over, I love my bacon sandwiches & a big juicy steak cooked medium rare. You can keep your Quorn & Qiunoa It's not for me.

‘Same reason that as a lesbian I keep penis substitutes in the bedside drawer: I'm repelled by the original flesh version but quite like a replica.’

The best rebuttal of ‘why do you want fake meat?’ I’ve heard.

domton · 06/05/2019 00:15

A personal chef.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/05/2019 00:21

For vegan foods to be made with no palm oil. Not even the so-called ethically produced stuff. Not eating or wearing animal products is fine but if you are being ethical rather than for heath reasons or just jumping on the current bandwagon, you should take into account the effects of the foods you eat. Actually not just palm oil, there are others.

I would struggle without cheese because vegan 'cheese' is foul and I can't eat pulses randomly, but I would find a way as I am vegetarian anyway.

DontCallMeShitley · 06/05/2019 00:22

health, not heath

SleepingSloth · 06/05/2019 00:24

Best response ever. 😂😂😂

MyCatHogsTheBed · 06/05/2019 00:28

Decent gluten free prepared food readily available and not too pricey or full of artificial rubbish.

A very good vegan bacon product.

Things like quinoa and avocados being genuinely ethically produced.

Purpletigers · 06/05/2019 00:53

Nothing. But then I do live on a farm. I’m not a fan of the dairy industry though so my dairy intake is minimal. I could easily cut out dairy before meat .

Purpletigers · 06/05/2019 01:07

For those who drink almond milk , you may want to do some research on the impact of water and pesticide use and it’s effects on the environment in California where at leat 75% of the worlds almonds are farmed.
The truth is not so simple that” meat is bad for the planet “ but that there are simply too many people . We need to think about how to control that ethnically before we try to get everyone to live on plants . Even David Attenborough agreed that overpopulation is the worlds biggest threat .

OnlineAlienator · 06/05/2019 01:09

Hoping you mean ethically not ethnically, purple! Shock

Halfling · 06/05/2019 01:11

When I find a good substitute for milk in tea. That's the only non vegan component of my current diet. I rarely consume any other non plant based food.

TwoShades1 · 06/05/2019 04:24

Good vegan cheese! That tastes like real cheese and has a good texture. But I need to have all kinds cheese in vegan form. Not just a like basic cheddar.

MyCatHogsTheBed · 06/05/2019 06:19

How could I forget that TwoShades1! Yes, a good range of strong vegan cheeses!!

Somebody local to me used to make cheeses from fermented nuts, they were exquisite if expensive. Sadly he stopped :(

GlitterPixie · 06/05/2019 06:34

If someone were to buy all my food and prepare all my meals I’d give it a go
