What would it take for you to become vegan?

A genuine question after a conversation some friends and I were having. They said that they'd become vegan if the ready meals and prepackaged vegan meals were cheaper. It got me thinking, are there any conditions under which you would consider veganism and if so, what are they?

OP posts:

I’d consider it if I had a chef. I do not have the time or ability to prepare appetising vegan meals.

GinTimeAtHome · 06/05/2019 20:56

Absolutely nothing would make me go Vegan!

You could send the ten plagues and I still wouldn’t.

gubbsywubbsy · 07/05/2019 21:13

@NailsNeedDoing .. most coffee shops have a variety of alternatives milk .. I settled on soya milk when I went vegan .. even at a kids farm the other day they had soya milk.. a lot of people need it for allergies so it's available .

I'd be there if someone can crack absolutely convincing, indistinguishable butter and cheese, I'm in!

Hearhere · 07/05/2019 22:05

What about if factory farming was made illegal and all meat became incredibly expensive?

Snog · 07/05/2019 22:14

It would be tough as I can't eat gluten

Oakmaiden · 07/05/2019 22:16

I could never be a vegan. I am trying to eat less meat and animal products, though.

But could never stop entirely.

JAPAB · 07/05/2019 22:18

If they genetically engineered carrots to taste like sausages, that might be a start in my case.

CaptSkippy · 07/05/2019 22:24

A garanteed way to keep my hemoglobine level high enough not to feel so faint all the time. I have been struggling with aneamia since I was 6. There is plant based iron, but it's just not as effective.

LiliesAndChocolate · 07/05/2019 22:27

I became vegan - well whole food plant based so no to all the fake crap - when I was diagnosed with a genetic mutation that not only gives me a 60% risk of cancer but also comes with the fact that cancer prognosis for my condition is extremely bad and unresponsive to successful treatment and in general with have a 10-15 years reduce life expectancy.

I adopted an anticancer lifestyle and eliminated every animal product.

So the answer to your question OP is the wish to be around for longer than predicted.

Featherbag · 07/05/2019 22:27

The sudden total, complete and permanent loss of all animals. That's what it would take for me to become vegan.

StoatofDisarray · 07/05/2019 22:31

I wouldn't give up meat unless it became illegal to eat it, and even then I would resent it mightily.

happyhillock · 07/05/2019 22:33

No, i love meat, chicken, fish, eggs, definitely couldn't give up cheese

Brazenhussy0 · 07/05/2019 22:36

Two reasons:

  1. Health
  2. Environment

I’m currently pescatarian. I would be vegan if my body could get all the nutrients it needed from a vegan diet. As it stands, it cannot and I become unwell, cognitively slow and very frail on a vegan diet.

If we all ate less meat, that would be a brilliant thing for the planet. If we all went vegan, it would be environmentally disastrous.
Balance is key.

Etino · 07/05/2019 22:44

I’m an omnivore now but I feel it’s inevitable. I use oat milk, I’m going off meat, I worry about the dairy industry and the planet.
But yes a personal chef would help

safariboot · 07/05/2019 23:37

Maybe if I developed a milk allergy. But otherwise, you can pry my proper tea from my cold dead hands.

I could definitely eat a lot less meat and cheese though.

Ohyesiam · 07/05/2019 23:46

I already do without meat and dairy , but I love eggs.
Could I be a veggan?

Emilizz34 · 08/05/2019 00:12

My dd is vegetarian .
My dh and I eat vegetarian or vegan meals for 5/7 days per week . Would have meat on the other two days .
I’ve tried veganism in the past but despite eating a very varied diet .
, I always begin to feel very ill around 5/6 months in .
I would miss goats cheese too much to go vegan again .

Slippersandacuppa · 08/05/2019 00:19

It took me becoming a mother to change my view of everything. Obviously all the sustainability stuff but more than that, it was finally having a mother’s instinct to protect my child. I couldn’t be part of taking another animal’s baby away from her after that.

ilovepixie · 08/05/2019 00:22

Nothing. I love bacon too much!

weaseley · 08/05/2019 00:27

If I was a different species.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/05/2019 00:28

Not a lot because I am already vegetarian but I am also allergic to dairy and I don’t eat many eggs and could certainly cut them out

MumUnderTheMoon · 08/05/2019 00:29

If there was no cheese and milk anymore. I'm veggie and have tried to go vegan but around day 5/6 I start to get really bitchy and dream about pizza. I just don't want to be that angry about food.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/05/2019 00:44

Ds has just turned vegan.

He loves vegan pizza

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/05/2019 00:45

I tried a vegan white Greek cheese (Planet Organic)

It was the best thing I have ever tasted.
