Speeding question

Hi all - long story short my husband thinks he might have been zapped by a police car in a lay by for speeding; brand new 30 mph zone straight after a 50 zone near to his childhood home so he knows the roads like the back of his hands. Neither of us thought he was speeding and he's a very safe driver; we had our 3 week old in the car so please no judgement for speeding as we really thought the limit was 50; waste of time to tell me he's a dangerous driver etc because that's nonsense. Rural road etc. Anyway; neither of us have ever had speeding fines etc in the past; what's the worst that can happen? We think we were doing about 45 (max) in a 30 zone. Any advice welcome. Thanks!

6 points and a fine.

If he has been caught speeding he'll soon get a letter through the post - I think it has to be within a timeframe of the offence, maybe 14 days? Within a certain threshold he might be offered a choice of either points and a fine or attending a speed awareness course but I think over that threshold there's no option, just the points and fine.

Thanks all. Does anyone know what the fine is?

DH thinks it's 3 points and £100 fine.

I've googled for you

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/05/2019 17:13

£100 was the old fine.

41 - 50 in a 30 is a band B; so the RAC says 4-6 points and 100% of his weekly income as a fine.

Minimum fine 100 and minimum 3 points for any offence. But if he was doing more than 40 it's a 'band b' offence - see pic

If he was a very safe driver he would have noticed the new signage. He may be offered a speed awareness course which benefits drivers who are full of answers as to why it is not their fault.

Spudina · 04/05/2019 17:14

He might be offered the speed awareness course. Costs about £100 but means no points. I've done it. It was actually useful.

Anothertempusername · 04/05/2019 17:22

Thanks so much all. @Stevienickssleeves thanks for your two pennyworth; I'm not rising though.

When new speed limits come in the council installs plenty of signage. I know you’re feeling defensive but the fact remains he can’t have been very attentive to the road conditions if he missed all the warning signage.

Anothertempusername · 04/05/2019 17:36

There was one 30 sign about 50 years after the 50 sign & the police were in a lay-by opposite the new 30 sign. I get that people vehemently hate speeding - so do I / we. It was a genuine mistake and my husband is so concerned. But that's all I'm going to say now- thanks for all the advice :-)
