Alcohol after tooth extraction? Any dentists?

I had a tooth extracted on Thursday morning and remember the dentist saying to avoid alcohol and fizzy drinks but not for how long. I have been invited out this evening but no sure if I can indulge. Does anyone have any experience?

all I know if if you're taking metronidazole then alcohol is a massive no no
But I don't know about the rest

I drank alcohol 3 days after having my tooth out. I was fine and my gap was fine!!

I went to the pub the next day with no adverse effects.

I had a wisdom tooth out a couple of weeks ago and the information leaflet I was given said no alcohol for 24 hours. It's because of bleeding. I believe alcohol can interfere with blood clotting.

I once made the mistake of going out for dinner (and drinks) on the last day of a course of antibiotics taken for a tooth abcess. Boy was I ill the next day :-(.

Thanks for replies. Not taking any antibiotics or painkillers.

Dental nurse here!
Your all good to Drink! Alcohol thins the blood and drinking the day after would risk the chance of a second bleed! The clot would be stable by now!
Have fun

@jenn88

Excellent, thank you! I didn’t want to do anything to delay healing as I have another one coming out next week 😩

Yea I would have alcohol I'm not going to lie
Only if I was taking metronidazole would I not
Everything else I drink with

WireHeart · 04/05/2019 20:51

Well the alcohol seems to be going down ok 😀

I think it’s healing nicely I haven’t had any blood at all.

I’ve had metronidazole before for other things, I know never to drink on that. There wasn’t any infection the extraction was just for ortho work

They say no alcohol or fizzy drinks because they sometimes disintegrate the blood clot and it can lead to dry socket. After a few days it's usually pretty well on it's way to healing.
