Do I need to do nibbles/canapés?

Having a large small mob over for a family celebration on Sunday. We will be gathering for the event at 11am then back to my house for approx 1pm. I have proper food (hot buffet) which will go into the oven to reheat as soon as we get in the door, but realistically it will take 30-45 mins to get it on plates and into mouths. I probably need to have some cold things to pick at for that time, don't I? All I can think of to have ready is pate and crackers, maybe some deli things? What would you and your dc pick at in such circumstances?

Crisps crudités and dips here (inc. salsa, hummus, sour cream etc)

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/05/2019 15:47

I'd be starving by then I'm afraid. Light nibbles so you don't end up with a wasted lunch. Could someone not attending start the food early ie a friendly neighbour?

Crisps, olives, cheese straws = zero prep

Justtrying · 02/05/2019 15:50

Crisps, crudités and dips. Should keep people going for an hour without spoiling their appetite.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/05/2019 15:50

Chips/crisps and dip is a great idea. I've never had a cheese straw so I shall investigate.

Didn't think of asking the neighbours. Might work if they aren't away for the weekend (bank holiday here). I've failed spectacularly with my oven timer previously so don't want to risk coming home to cinders.

Could you put the food for heating into the oven and set a timer?

BlueCornishPixie · 02/05/2019 15:53

Just have some crisps, nuts if no one's allergic, olives out. You don't need anything fancy just a couple of bowls out so people can nibble if they want.

Really people should be fine, I think most adults can manage from breakfast to 2 without eating, and parents of DC will probs give them a snack just before
so you don't need much but I think just some basic nibbles in case.

woodcutbirds · 02/05/2019 15:53

tortilla chips and homemade salsa, humous and crudites; crisps, cheese straws, nuts and olives - that's plenty to keep people going.
You could do fancy canapes but they are so time consuming, unless you buy them ready made, which is expensive.

DirtyDennis · 02/05/2019 15:56

I completely disagree with @woodcutbirds on the homemade salsa - just buy some in a jar. Fuck the effort of homemade.

BlueCornishPixie · 02/05/2019 15:58

Yeah really no need to homemake salsa, waste of time, get the one from the dip section.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/05/2019 16:02

I'm already throwing money at this problem, woodcutbirds, so I'm not adverse to it at this point! Grin

I think I have the famine gene, so seriously over cater everything and I'm trying to moderate myself a bit this time. Sounds like crisps, dips, nuts, etc will be fine so I'll get them added to the shopping list. Thanks folks.

Misses point of thread entirely

OP, You've NEVER had a cheese straw?! 😮😮😮

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 02/05/2019 16:35

Sorry, LadyMonica, no, I haven't. I can't ever show my face at a Corinium cocktail party.

Posh crisps and dips are the way forward.

And god I love a bit of Jilly!

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 02/05/2019 20:03

Crisps or those combo mix thingy snacks (M&S, sainsburys), dorritos, dips, olives, cheese straws, mini gherkins, cherry tomatoes, salmon mousse canapés (pre-tipped onto plates and stored in fridge). All shop bought.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 02/05/2019 20:05

P.S: Might do a cold meats platter & french stick bread & butter too. But then nobody would really need your warm buffet?
