Does anyone have any tips on how to stop a 4 year old from soiling their pants? My son is toilet trained but prefers to soil his pants because he feels he’s going to miss out on something whether he’s playing with his friends at nursery or whether he’s on his own playing with his toys at home. My partner and I have tried everything we can think of including a behaviour chart giving him goals to work towards eg cinema trip / going to his friends birthday party when he makes it to different stages as he goes up or he goes down for bad behaviour, naughty step, confiscating toys, talking it through with him nicely to understand how it happened, being very firm with him, not letting him watch telly and giving him sugar free treats when he goes on the toilet etc. We’ve even taken him to the doctors in case he had a bowel problem. He goes through good periods sometimes for a couple of weeks then suddenly we’ll have a bad patch again that can also last for weeks. I just don’t know what else to try... has anyone else gone through the same and can help?

Have a look at the website for ERIC.
They are very helpful.
Also, sometimes the soiling is (counter intuitive though it sounds) due to constipation. The bowel becomes compacted and then further poo gets pushed round. The longer it goes on, the more the bowel gets stretched, so it is worth pushing the GP for a referral to a hospital specialist.

Yeah I’d place money on constipation and not just fancying pooing his pants.
