The word slaw, used instead of coleslaw. On some stupid food related post on fb.

I don't even like to eat coleslaw tbh.

Anyone for some slaw? 🤮

Apparently a slaw is a salad of chopped or shredded veg in a vinaigrette but a coleslaw is made with shredded cabbage as the primary ingredient - Kohl (pronounced Cole) is German for cabbage.

So, if you are being really technical, there is a difference between slaw and coleslaw. But if they are using slaw when it is a coleslaw, they are being too pretentious.

From stupid to educational in two posts... 🤔

toomuchtooold · 01/05/2019 20:26

I know what it means, it still annoys me.

Sorry, @IhateBoswell.

CakeNinja · 01/05/2019 20:32

I hate the word too. Dp makes slaw (ffs I even tense up writing the bloody word) with veg and a vinegar type dressing and he knows how much the word winds me up so says it multiple times when cooking.

IhateBoswell · 01/05/2019 20:33

Ha I was being serious, I'd have presumed they were being pretentious if I'd read slaw. I like a bit of knowledge.. Smile

Galvantula · 01/05/2019 20:34

The pictured whatever it was was indeterminate... it could have been an actual slaw to be fair if it was a non cabbage type. 🤔

The word still hurts my eyes though.

I totally googled coleslaw and slaw before i posted, to see if my irrational hatred might be justified. Grin

I do feel it looks pretentious on a lot of menus.

Slaw or slå just means salad.
