Ingredient to use instead of sesame seeds

I’m making a Jamie Oliver recipe for a Thai green curry. In his version he makes the chicken separate to the curry, with the chicken being glazed with honey and then sesame seeds

Couldn’t get the sesame seeds (only went to Aldi) and don’t want to put just honey on the chicken so what else could I use.

He calls it crispy chicken?

I just thought maybe crushed peanuts or cashews with the honey

Then it’s be honey nut chicken 😬😂🤔

Sesame seeds won't make it crispy

If you want sesame flavour add a tiny bit of sesame oil to the honey

Otherwise just leave them off

I have sesame oil 🤔

I’m not sure how the chicken becomes crispy. I don’t really understand that bit of the recipe

The sesame seeds don’t sound essential, just leave them off.

I thought maybe sesame seeds would be important for the texture but maybe not - although then it’s just honey chicken 🤷🏻‍♀️

The sesame seeds are more as a decorative finish than a flavouring, so just leave them out.

AdaColeman · 01/05/2019 19:36

I've read that recipe properly now.

You deserve a Master Chef Gold Star Star if you manage to follow those instructions for cooking the chicken without at least two assistant chefs helping! What a faff for a few chicken thighs! Wine

What a faff for a few chicken thighs!

I know! I couldn’t work out what he was talking about but think he wants me to cook the chicken on a pan and then put another heated pan on top of them almost like a George Foreman grill 🤷🏻‍♀️ There must be a other way 🤔

Yes, he seems to flatten them with a second pan and a weight, to make them crispy??

AliceRR · 01/05/2019 19:59

It’s very odd. I’m tempted to just put the chicken in the air fryer or grill. It’s not thighs anyway, I’m using breasts as my DH doesn’t like thighs 😃

Yes, I'd try the air fryer or grill as well!
(I'd rather have breast than thigh too, thigh always seems more like shredded chicken to me!)

JO massively complicates things I find, and creates loads of washing up

And hugely overuses vinegar. Hmm

But I digress. Sesame seeds - an optional extra I'd say for this recipe.

Sesame seeds do make it crispy! I'm making a low carb crispy chicken right now with ground almonds and sesame seeds and spices as the coating. I have in the past substituted the sesame seeds with smashed up cashews which didn't work pretty well. Presume you've made it now, but your instincts were definitely right!

Yes he makes lots of separate dishes and I have not yet made one of his 30 min meals in 30 mins!

He uses lots of limes!!

I ended up just cooking in a bit of salt, pepper, ginger, garlic and toasted sesame oil then smothered in honey and put under the grill. It wasn’t quite crispy but it was nice.

It was a good green curry recipe actually.

I’ve heard of oats too for crispy chicken 😃
