How good is your memory?

If someone asked me what I had for lunch yesterday or what I did last weekend I genuinely wouldn’t be able to remember.

I lose keys/ dummies/ phone several times a day.

I’m mostly fine at work because I’m organised and write stuff down, or if I’ve arranged coffee with a friend I don’t forget plans. I just can’t seem to remember day to day stuff!

It’s embarrassing sometimes I feel like such an idiot.

Anyone else have this issue?!

Mine isn’t great. I have diagnosed poor short term memory with dyslexia. The only two things that have helped me are taking omega-3 tablets and having a bullet journal to write everything down in.

Has your memory always been poor or has it got worse recently?

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 01/05/2019 11:13

awful. I can't remember places I've visited, TV I've watched, books I've read.

It drives DH nuts.

JudyDenchsBloomers · 01/05/2019 11:16

Mine's not bad. I manage to keep up/on top of life admin, appointments, meetings etc outside of work. Inside of work I'm faced with remembering the background to a lot of company interactions and even though I don't remember all of the detail all of the time, I can remember a few key points which reminds me to look up the rest as I need it. I do make a lot of lists, updating diaries and calendars to assist.

I'm pretty good in a pub quiz, but that's a different portion of the brain where song lyrics and other trivia sits Grin

I’ve got a freakish memory for some things - people’s faces and names I can recall from meeting them years ago. Certain memories I can remember very clearly.

Rap lyrics of 90s bands are locked in my brain. Information about politics or current affairs though I cannot remember for the life of me

IntoValhalla · 01/05/2019 11:20

My long term memory is pretty good - I can recall things from early childhood, or things that happened years ago with clarity.
My short term memory is a whole other kettle of fish Confused I forget where I’ve put my glasses on a daily basis, I forget important items off mental shopping lists, I forget to get something out of the freezer for dinner at least once a week etc.
The only reason I remember appointments etc is because I put them into the calendar on my phone and set notifications to pop up everyday for 3 days before it so I don’t forget!

freshasthebrightbluesky · 01/05/2019 11:24

I've often said that if dh left I'd never ever know where my glasses were because I'm always losing them! I forget silly things like that and nouns seem to fall out of my head. I do remember appointments and work bookings though, even if I don't write them down.

Just got back from picking DD up from nursery and forget where I parked the car. Blush

My long term and short term is BAD!

It makes it worse that I lost a friend recently and I’m struggling to remember our memories together- unless I have photos or look through messages.

I think it might be a family thing as my Mum is the same. DH remembers EVERYTHING and I just wish I could me more like that.

I have frequently been told that I have an amazing (long-term) memory. And admittedly,I do seem able to recall things accurately that other people can't. E.g. I can remember everything about when I gave birth to my Dd,35 years ago. But,I find that there are things that I can't recall properly that happened 35 - 40 years ago, such as when I went several times to see my favourite band play live in the early 80s. I can remember travelling to the venue, and coming home, but the time in between is just a blur! Very odd. I also can't remember anything about my first day at college in the early 80s.
But my short term memory is crap. I'm always forgetting where I've put things, and if you asked me what I had for dinner last night,I would struggle to remember.

ALongHardWinter · 01/05/2019 16:56

I'm also good at remembering song lyrics. I listened today to a song that I hadn't heard for what must be 30 years, and to my surprise, found myself singing along almost word perfect.

CatManIsInHisDressingGownAgain · 01/05/2019 17:28

Not bad but I still make lists for EVERYTHING as you can guarantee I'd forgot something if I don't write it down whilst it's in my head.

I do struggle remembering where I've seen actors that turn up in things. That's when imdb comes in handy Grin

I am pretty bad for long term memory, I cannot remember much from my teens and twenties. Too much pot I think.
