How common is it that they can’t see the heart clearly enough on the 21 week scan and you have to go back, freaking out a little

20 weeks pregnant and all looked good, everything that should be there is there and it was moving and we saw and heard the heart beating. But it was in a position the sonographer couldn’t see the heart in detail enough to do that check. Walked about and the baby didn’t move so I have to go back. I’m freaking out slightly, is this common?

This happened to me, they had me drinking cold water, orange juice, doing star jumps, running up and down stairs and my son would not move round 😂 had to go back about a week and a half later and every thing went to plan that time. Its quite common, a few of my friends have had to go back as baby wouldn't cooperate.

Yea that’s exactly the same position this one was in! Back to us and head down and wouldn’t turn. Thank you I need reassurance as I’ve suddenly had a panic

I had the same and everything was fine baby was just in an awkward position. Unfortunately baby was in the exact same position the next time and they didn't manage to see it as clearly as they would have liked but could see the chambers etc and everything looked as it should. She kept putting her hands on her face when they tried to look at her face as wellGrin

I had it in both my pregnancies. It’s just bad positioning, and in our case both boys were fine.

Likethebattle · 01/05/2019 13:05

It’s common, they want to see the inside of the heart and the chambers and if the baby is in the wrong position they can’t do that. My friend had to go back twice as her ds was a contrary little bugger, couldn’t see his heart properly and held his arms between his legs so couldn’t tell if he was male/female.

maggienolia · 01/05/2019 13:21

Happened to me with DD1. It was all ok at the next scan 2 weeks later.
It's all in the positioning

Sugarhouse · 01/05/2019 14:20

It happened to me we went back a few weeks later and he still wouldn’t get in a good enough position for proper checks despite a lot of trying on my part. Anyway that was it they didn’t do another and he is now a healthy 21 month old

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 01/05/2019 16:01

The 14 week old that’s currently guzzling her bottle in my arms was back to front and upside down on her 20 week scan. A frappechino and a long walk didn’t budge her at all. We had to go back after a week for her heart measurements.

MrsPear · 01/05/2019 16:50

They tried twice and decided there was nothing to obvious and left it. They did another check once he was born - top to bottom. All fine.

Justincase87 · 01/05/2019 16:53

With the anomaly scan they have to be sure they've seen certain things or they can't sign you off as it were, our little girl had emptied her stomach and needed a full one to be measured so we had to wait around! The sonographer also spent around 15 minutes in silence looking at the heart which freaked me out, but all was normal!

Shookethtothecore · 01/05/2019 18:52

Thank you everyone, I feel better now

Mine did. 8 now.

Happened to me with dd1 17 years ago. Had to go back. She kept her legs firmly shut each time as well.

It is very common OP.
