I read Sherlock Holmes and enjoyed the stories at that age so definitely suitable.

Some of the language, and themes, are (unsurprisingly) old fashioned. And I don't know if the audio version will omit any of the inappropriate racial language that's in some of the stories.

Harry potter is also read by Stephen fry and I've enjoyed it in the car on long journeys

I have LOVED Sherlock Holmes since I was 8! They are definitely stories a 12 year old will enjoy. However, they are somewhat of their time - there are some slightly racist, sexist and colonial moments in there (perhaps increasingly in the later stories) that may require a bit of explanation/ historical gloss from an adult.

Revealing my nerdery here but I actually think Simon Vance's Complete Sherlock is better than Stephen Fry's. I have both. And all the books in numerous kinds of edition. Blush
