Yuk! Slightly infected sebaceous cyst - will it settle in its own?

Have one on the base of my back —top of bum— and it’s now red and lumpy.

Will it definitely need any antibiotics or is there a chance that it will settle down?

What’s the Mumsnet consensus?

Damn you all Grin
Ok so am driving to work now (pulled in to reply quickly). DH took a photo to show me but I promptly made him delete it as it showed my bum crack. He thinks he can get it back and with a little cropping I think I can make it presentable for you bunch of sporners!
(Always love a sporner thread but never thought I’d be a contributor)

Mean while has anyone survived this without antibiotics/ half around of flesh being cut out?

You really don't want to get to the cutting out stage so get thee to your GP.

My DS has a sebaceous cyst that gets repeatedly infected. The dr likes to give it 1-2 weeks to get better by itself, then prescribes anti-biotics. Last time they did that, it was too late and the cyst was too badly infected for the anti biotics to control it.

It was going to burst and the skin started to break down, so DS needed emergency surgery. As he was only 6, it was all under GA and very dramatic. They were unable to remove the cyst due to how far gone the infection was, so we still have that nightmare to come.

I'd go to the drs, even if they fob you off initially and tell you to wait for anti biotics, at least you will know how long to leave it before going back. Get DH to draw a line with a felt tip all the way round the raised section, so that you can track how much it changes over the next few days. Good luck!

AnnaMagnani · 01/05/2019 08:17

No, not a chance.

DH had one, couldn't be bothered with faffing about OK mainly I couldn't - £350 to local plastic surgeon to remove it.

Done within 48hrs, money well spent.

PinkOboe · 01/05/2019 08:19

Pilondial cyst? Dh had one of these. It was incredibly painful

whothefuckhas5children · 01/05/2019 09:38

DH has sent on the photo and I’ve cropped and cropped it! I’ve made the mistake of rubbing it to see if it’s sore and YES it definitely is!

For all those rubbing their thighs in excitement here’s the photo...
Doesn’t look like much but damn it hurts.

Get to the doctor before it gets any worse. Like a previous PP’s DS I have one that got infected. Didn’t go to doctors quick enough so antibiotics didn’t work - emergency surgery under GA but also couldn’t remove it then. Have had two years of no big cyst but it started growing again so I expect to have to have it out soon. They’ll want to do it under local anaesthetic but I’m such a wimp I’m dreading it.

Good luck!

whatnow40 · 01/05/2019 10:29

Here is what it looked like when DS needed surgery, and what it looks like just before an infection takes hold. I think you could possibly shake this infection without the anti biotics, but still get the dr to check it over so that you can get them promptly if it gets worse.

WienerDiva · 01/05/2019 10:40

Please get to the dr. Could be a pilonidal sinus abscess (spelling isn't right I'm sure)

I had one a few years ago and needed emergency surgery but it was fine

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/05/2019 10:46

I'd see a doctor before the BH because if you don't you just know it'll get worse at the weekend and the surgery will be closed Monday!

Lisette1940 · 01/05/2019 10:50

I've had a pilonidal sinus which your cyst reminds me of. GP tried antibiotics but i ended up having it treated in hospital. It's not something you can pop yourself. It's very sore. Flowers

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 01/05/2019 12:59

Looks like a pilonidal cyst/abscess. You need to see dr asap for antibiotics as it will get larger and extremely painful and may need operating on if it gets worse.

whothefuckhas5children · 01/05/2019 14:40

Nooooo! Don’t be telling me all this.Whatnow - your child’s looks much, much, much more painful than mine.

My cyst has a brown head on it. Has anyone else’s?

OP posts:
whothefuckhas5children · 01/05/2019 14:43

DONT GOOGLE THE CYST!!!!

Jesus - it’s exaclty where mine is and looks horrendous when it goes wrong! I have a doctors appointment on Friday at 2.15.

When I get home tonight (about 7.30) I’ll get DH to mark the border and take another photo (might even upload the photo for you sporners fur comparison Wink).

Sounds like the one that my DD had removed from her temple. Doctor faffed about with it for ages with antibiotics, squeezing it etc. It had to be removed and I wish it'd been done right at the start as it became red, crusty, very raised and painful. Saline water can be quite effective in dealing with them but definitely not tea tree which seemed to make DD's a lot worse.

CrotchetyQuaver · 01/05/2019 15:00

Are you sure that's a cyst and not a brewing abscess? If it's an abscess it needs medical intervention and will hurt like buggery which it sounds like yours is well on the way to. Worst pain ever, up there with ear infections Sad

whothefuckhas5children · 01/05/2019 15:03

Just been to the bathroom in work - it’s a very weird thing to be in work toilets maneuvering your arm and bum to get good light onto your bum boil to try to get a good photo Blush

Not sure it’s completely in focus but it does seem to be growing a nice little bum boil head Shock

Placemarking for bursting video....

CrotchetyQuaver · 01/05/2019 15:11

Sorry but that is developing like my abscess did

whothefuckhas5children · 01/05/2019 15:24

Crochety - how long did yours take to go full blown? I have an appointment on Friday afternoon with a GP who does dermatology. She doesn’t work tomorrow though.

From where it is, it really needs to be checked out to make sure its not a pylon whatsit thing.
They can have hairs trapped inside them and don't clear up easily.
