10 yo has to have MRI

My ds has to have an MRI in a couple of weeks.

It's 4 areas so should take a while. Any tips on how I can prepare him for it? I genuinely have no clue how he's going to react to any of it.

Get them to work out a playlist or podcasts, they will tell you the format as it varies by hospital by dd could log into her (family) Spotify account. The main thing is they have to remain still

No metal remember there's lockers outside to leave shoes and handbags. It was very loud but they gave me headphones too and you can choose radio or various cd's too

Please speak to them in advance. If he's a worrier, he may not get on with it and need a back up plan.

I got into the MRI tube for a neck and spinal scan and had a panic attack as soon as they put me in - it turned out I was claustrophobic....

I had a small amount of diazepam prescribed by the GP to take when I went back for a brain scan but it wasn't enough and I hyperventilated through that as well. It affected the quality of both scans.

Best wishes to you both, it's a stressful time.

I still wore my jeans was ok with them, she just took my glasses into the room to see if they had any magnetic pull she came out and said they did and once the machine kicked in it would just literally pull them from my face lol. Hope everything goes well for you both xx

OP, it might be worth contacting the hospital to ask how long the scan is likely to take.

It's true, a head and whole spine is 4 regions, but most spines can be done as 2 regions, not 3. You can also check regarding CDs, DVDs when you call.

Hope it goes okay!

When I confirmed the appointment they said it would take about 40-45 mins and to take a DVD. The neurologist said 3 regions for the spine, so I'm just going on that. If it only means an extra 10 mins I would be happier that they be more thorough. It totally depends on how ds is with it all though, obviously.
