Where would you go to buy a school backpack?

DD starts secondary in September.

Grandparents have kindly offered to buy her school bag.

We have scoped out at the end of the day, most of the younger ones seem to have backpacks.

We are struggling to actually find any backpacks in the shops though.

Where would you go to actually physically try them out? Really don't want to buy online.

Have looked in a few department stores, hardly managed to find anything at all, apart from designer stuff at over £100. Outdoor shops do sell rucksacks, but Dd wants something less "outdoorsy". Cath Kidston (acceptable to Dd!) seems too flimsy.

Budget is about £50 for something sturdy and hopefully lasting a few years.

Do luggage shops actually exist any more?

Tk maxx.

You can either look in store or buy online and have delivered to the store. If you don’t like it you can get it refunded.

Online. Most have hype, Adidas, vans bags where we are. I find them sturdy and they last at least 2-3 years of mistreatment for £30."

insancerre · 28/04/2019 16:43

I wouldn’t go to a shop
I’d look on amazon

I bought the camp one for a relative it’s light but sturdy.

Lots of the Year 7s have Superdry bags before progressing by the end of the year to a 'handbag' Grin

Futureisland · 28/04/2019 16:44

Sports shops like jd sports and foot asylum. Otherwise tk maxx or maybe debenhams would have some?

Alwaysgrey · 28/04/2019 16:45

We’ve got Adidas and Vans and hype backpacks.

Littleduckeggblue · 28/04/2019 16:45

I'd probably aim for a less expensive one that will last a year. IMO it's nice to get a new bag/pencil case every year at school when you buy new school uniform. How about Smiggle? Or is that too young?

unicornsrule · 28/04/2019 16:46

Amazon dd 13 is at secondary she has a hype bag

bellinisurge · 28/04/2019 16:46

My dd is now in y7. Hype backpack off Amazon. Loads of colours and wide choice.

unicornsrule · 28/04/2019 16:46

Hype last ages very sturdy

BlueMerchant · 28/04/2019 16:47

I'd personally look in high street fashion shops like topshop/ new look etc. They may not be super strong but they will be well under £50 and your DD could choose a new one each term?

mummmy2017 · 28/04/2019 16:47

Aurban outfitters do a great one.
You place it flat in the table and unzip it.
So easy to get what you need inside as it peels, you can even get what is at the bottom of the pack.

DropZoneOne · 28/04/2019 16:48

DD is off to secondary in September. She's asked for a Hype bag. I think they sell them in John Lewis if there's one near you?

FiremanKing · 28/04/2019 16:48

Do be aware that the lasting for a few years might not be a good thing as they like to keep with trends and having the same bag the next year might not be favourable.

Hadalifeonce · 28/04/2019 16:48

Used to get my DC's from the local market for £10.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 28/04/2019 16:48

I've got one of the cath Kidston frame backpacks and it's definitely sturdy. My bags take a bashing because I use public transport and carry my life in them and it's fairing very well.

ittakes2 · 28/04/2019 16:55

I recommend Dakine which just do backpacks. They are sturdy and light weight and include things like padded computer pockets just off the bottom of the pack since children drop bags, they have special pockets for phones/money and you can get them with insulated lunch pocketsin the pack. Amazon and surf stores sell them - my son's 22L was £30 on Amazon.

mum11970 · 28/04/2019 16:56

Ds 14 uses backpacks from sports shops, Nike, Adidas. Dd 18 uses big handbags but has folders rather than books that yr7-11 use. The only backpacks dd has used in the last few years have been Fjällräven Kanken.

greenelephantscarf · 28/04/2019 16:59

yes to sports stores.
slazenger makes good ones. or fanci.

Hippychick78 · 28/04/2019 17:00

This kipling one looks great very cheap for kipling. Great quality and washable and they last. I have a minor obsession with kipling bags and wouldn't really use anything else 🤪 www.tkmaxx.com/home/hobbies+leisure/luggage+travel-accessories/travel-bags/teal-star-patterned-backpack/p/11033523
