Are your DC allowed their phone in their room?

Just about to buy DD a phone for her 11th birthday and thinking of the ground rules. So far I have:

No phone until ready for school in the morning
Phone available between 5-7 in the evening
I must know password and be free to check it whenever
No age inappropriate apps
Phone downstairs at night
Phone to be used in communal areas of the house

My Dsis says the last point is too much and that all DC are allowed phones upstairs for privacy when chatting to friends. I say if phones weren't allowed in bedrooms, a lot less DC would be sending inappropriate things/be pushed into sexting ect. What are your rules?

I have two Dds with phones and use exactly the rules you have listed. It works well for us and the dc have never complained (so far).

Family link is a great app that allows you to approve apps that they want to download. You can also set 'bed times' so they cant use the phone apart from calls. You can also see what apps they have used and how long.
We use it for our 14 yr old and it's great as he knows we control the phone If he breaks the rules
We know his pass code and ge know we can check his phone if I'm suspect about anything.
He does use his phone on his room but due to the app I know what hes on.

No not in room at that age. Also has to have qustodio installed (so daily time limits, no social media Apps, lots of websites blocked) ....it's the internet in their pocket... Honestly in 10 years time it will be as regulated as smoking and alcohol for undeveloped kids....

11 yr old ds1 has pretty much the same rules. Dh can control the phone from his so can disable it if ds1 behaves badly, and it disables during certain times (7:30pm-7am). I do let him use it in his room but that's only because he doesn't really use it up there. Only for the odd text. Generally he's in the living room. He has to put it on charge in our room or living room over night.

Oh and dh has to approve apps before the phone will let them be installed.
