Children are not allowed overdrafts. Any high street bank will do a current account with debit card.

Nnnnnineteen · 27/04/2019 13:17

Mine is with nationwide which seems fine.

olderthanyouthink · 27/04/2019 15:13

No one will give him an overdraft! I had a young person account with natwest and I was declined in McDonald's because I was a few pence short and I couldn't even use it to buy petrol at the pump for some reason. Confused

DD (14) uses a Santander 123 account. Was one of the recommended ones for kids. She has a visa debit card with it which she uses for on line purchases.

howrudeforme · 27/04/2019 15:22

Also Santander 123 - he had it with a cash machine card then I upgraded him to a bank card. He has an app on phone that allows his to check balance etc. He’s almost 13. It works for us.

Happy with the account.

Have a look on MSE and Which and see which ones are the best atm. Some offer quite good rates for savers.

Homemadearmy · 27/04/2019 15:47

Mine have accounts with Barclays, which seem ok. I asked for the debit cards not to be contactless as I was concerned with them losing them in school etc

dementedpixie · 27/04/2019 15:49

My 2 also have Santander 123 accounts. Has a decent interest rate too

RoseDog · 27/04/2019 15:51

My dd has a Nationwide account and I am away to set one up for ds, when they are 14 you can set it up online.

Bunnybigears · 27/04/2019 15:56

DS 12 has a Lloyds bank account, nice and easy and he has the app on his phone to keep track, it can be unlocked with fingerprint so he doesn't have to remember a password. No overdraft facility.

Comefromaway · 27/04/2019 15:58

Mine have HSBC. It was one of the recommended ones at the time we set it up.

WindypopsWendy · 27/04/2019 16:15

Account with Nationwide for under 18s. A debit card but no overdraft.

Overseasmom100 · 27/04/2019 18:33

So all sounds perfect thanks

My DD got one with Lloyds at about that age. We (she and l) had to have an interview with the branch manager!

AnyFucker · 27/04/2019 19:13

Mine had under 19 accounts with Lloyds

Online banking and a debit card.

Most banks and buildings societies have a kids account with varying amounts of access but no overdrafts (can't 'borrow money' which is what an overdraft is, until you are 18)
Good guide here www.money.co.uk/current-accounts/how-to-get-a-bank-account-for-under-18s.htm
My kids have a Lloyd's kids account and a Nationwide one - but as they are under 11, I am named on it as a trustee.
