Anyone else out there learning to drive?

I'm 33 and after years of not wanting/needing to drive I'm finally at the stage where it will actually make my life so much easier!

Currently managing quiet roads easily but struggling a bit with roundabouts but it's more confidence than anything else.

Theory test is booked for the middle of May too 🤯

How you all getting on?
I've not driven since passing my test but tomorrow I travel to pick up a car (well pick up) from a family member 200 miles away and will have to get used to driving it in an unfamiliar city then drive a 180 mile motorway drive home on the Sunday - I must be mad!

MissingMo · 05/07/2019 13:59

You must be mad @hmwhatsmynameagain, hope the journey went okay though. I passed in March after more than a year of lessons (once a week) got my car about 3 weeks ago. Still very nervous but I figure that will dissipate in time. Try to use it at least twice a week.

hmwhatsmynameagain · 07/07/2019 14:25

I did it!
2 days driving round a unknown to me city and a 200 mile motorway journey home!

I hope this inspires those of you learning that it can be done, at the start of this year I hadn't sat behind the wheel in 20 years, and with perseverance I got to what I have achieved in his weekend.

Now to remember in the morning that I don't have to walk to the bus stop to get the work!

ILoveTheHotPriest · 25/07/2019 08:03

Resurrecting this thread as I've got my test next month! I started learning in March and this week have been doing a lesson a day.

RobinsEggBlue · 25/07/2019 09:37

Well done you! Just passed my theory test this morning so have until 2021 to get the practical side cracked!

ILoveTheHotPriest · 25/07/2019 16:57

Well done RobinsBlueEgg! One step closer!

Been a while since any of you messaged. How is/are the driving/lessons/tests going?

I passed 4 months ago now aged 33. Not done a huge amount of driving since to be honest. Have to force myself to go out in the car. Mixture of it’s just not in my normal routine to drive, normally walk, cycle or bus. But mainly as I’m still not very confident. Was away lots of August, so didn’t do any for 3 weeks. Have made myself go out almost every day since. I can very slowly feel myself getting there. Not so shit scared by our driveway anymore hoorah. (Big dip, poor vision).

Soooo.... update me. How are you all doing?? xx

RobinsEggBlue · 01/09/2019 10:35

Congratulations @NightDreaming on passing your test, mine is booked for October. I upped my lessons from 1 to 2 a week over the summer which has helped. I think I am capable of passing but am worried I’m just going to be so nervous on the day. Did a couple of drives this week with husband and children in the car which went well and helped my confidence- just need to keep going! I know what you mean about forcing yourself, but it sounds like you are doing brilliantly!

NightDreaming · 06/09/2019 20:47

@RobinsEggBlue I’m sure you’re doing brilliantly. Upping your hours sounds like a great plan. Was having the odd 3hr lesson at the end. As for the rest itself all I can say is during your lessons to work out what makes you feel comfortable. I realised gentile chat was good for me. Stopped me over thinking/stressing. Meaning at the beginning of the test I warned the instructor I was going to chat, as it kept my nerves down. Towards the end she had to ask me to shut up so she could ask me the show me/tell me questions. I was embarrassed but we both laughed about it.

Find out what makes you comfortable. Your instructor should help you do that. And breathe. That’s important to Wink

*too (gah. I hate grammar mistakes)

Hi all! It's been a while. My test is booked for 21st September so not long to go now. We bought a 2nd car, a Volvo S60, so much much easier than learning in a great big hilux truck! I have a lot riding on this test as start uni soon and really need to be able to drive there and back and pick DC up from after school club etc.

We have a day planned on Sat to practice all the manoeuvres over and over until they are bang on. I'm fairly confident that the rest of my driving is good enough but as I still haven't had a single lesson we shall see!!

I will be doing the test in my own car so at least I'm familiar with it and know how long it is for parking etc. Need to make sure it's got all the things it needs for me to be able to use it in the test as well.

How's everyone else getting on? Well done on passing your test PP. Thats awesome.

RobinsEggBlue · 06/10/2019 09:29

@ShadowsInTheDarkness how was your test? Got mine the week after next and I’m in a constant state of anxiety! Any tips on how not to fall to pieces?

user1333796 · 12/02/2020 22:21

How is it going for everyone? Just booked my first lesson at the age of 33, and finding and reading through this has been reassuring.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 13/02/2020 13:10

Just wanted to add a 'you can do it' post.
I passed earlier in my 30s and it was worth all the stress.

ItWentInMyEye · 13/02/2020 13:31

I'm starting lessons at the beginning of March for the first time and I'm 32 😳 terrified.
