How often do you eat out/get takeaways?

And how much would you say you on average spend on it in a month?

I’m currently trying to save and have tracked all my expenditures and I’m shocked to see that I’ve spent over £200 on eating out/takeaways this month - not including normal food shopping!

Want to see what the average is!

Sorry that was for takeaways.

We go out for a quick, cheap cafe lunch of soup or toasties on most weekeds during school terms.

Proseccoagain · 05/05/2019 11:52

Once a week with late DH, spend about £40 a time. Now, on my own, a couple of times a month, about £20 each time.

Bluesheep8 · 05/05/2019 11:55

Take away every couple of months, less than £20. Eat out probably around 4 times per year, mainly if we have visitors and we tend to go to the same Indian restaurant. That's around £25, not including wine and beer.

Takeaways always seem very expensive.

We aren't saving every penny right now so I couldn't tell you accurately what we spend. I will get coffees out and take my elderly mum out a fair bit for example.

Eating out and takeaways is an obvious area to cut if you are economising. Asking others what they pay out isn't going to help you but it may make you feel hard done by!

Bluesheep8 · 05/05/2019 11:55

The takeaway is always Chinese.

unicorncupcake · 05/05/2019 12:17

Far too much, cutting down is one of our main priorities after our meeting with the bank manager last week (need to start cutting back to pay off some CC debt and start saving for new house). Normally eat out at least once per weekend, just a coffee and sandwich type lunch usually, costing around £30 for all of us. This week we’ve had two takeaways which is unusual-normally it would be one a week/fortnight max. We rarely go out for ‘nice’ meals (two or three times per year?) but will do a pizza express type family friendly meal a couple of times a month (with vouchers wherever possible). We also go to McDonald’s or costa drive through probably once a week. I also have zero social life in term time but meet with all my other teacher friends in the holidays so the holidays are REALLY expensive, and term time is relatively cheap. Current work life balance is horrific and have been very unhappy so there is definitely an element of throwing money at the situation to survive and also cheering myself up. Will be part time from September so am looking forward to being able to be better prepared and do more slow cooker/batch cooking/baking to make life easier. Also when I’m happier, I eat more healthily and don’t crave the quick junk food fix in quite the same way.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 05/05/2019 12:19

Takeaway probs once or twice a month, £60 a time. We have teenagers.

Meals out £100-£120 ish but again probably only once a month. Recently went to the Toby Carvery which was a revelation at £50 😂

Chickenwing · 05/05/2019 12:33

Takeaway every Friday night. Also on a Saturday if we aren't eating out. Macdonalds or Greggs once a week. On a Friday I buy a "fun" lunch rather than the usual packed lunch... We spent around £200 per month on food outside the weekly food shop. We are also a little bit fat Grin

Ronsters · 05/05/2019 12:53

Not very often, three times this year so far. I find it expensive and the takeaways near me are not that good.

Floralnomad · 05/05/2019 13:02

We have a takeaway about once a week but dd I and I eat out a couple of times a week generally at lunch time . I’ve never worked it out but probably spend £3/400 per month .

Floralnomad · 05/05/2019 13:05

I should add that nobody in our house drinks alcohol . I also don’t think eating out / takeaways is particularly linked to obesity / weight as dd and I are both healthy and slim and dh who rarely eats out / has takeaway is overweight .

Mumof1andacat · 05/05/2019 13:16

We have a takeaway about 3 or 4 times a year. Maybe have lunch out twice a month if that. We have in past never had spare money for takeaways. We have more disposable income these days but getting a takeaway just doesn't cross our minds. Don't have much of a social life and a lack of baby sitters mean we don't eat out evenings.

yikesanotherbooboo · 05/05/2019 13:36

Takeaway about once in six weeks ; usually because I am going to be home from work late.
We do , however, eat out at restaurants or pubs when we are on holiday.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2019 13:43

Depends what you call eating out. If the work canteen is included, then every day. I often have at least one meal a day out on the weekends as well, so one of every 3 meals. They'll be canteen or cafes, mainly though, not expensive restaurants.
If I do go to a proper restaurant with friends, total cost still wouldn't be over 30 including drinks.

I don't get takeaways at all because if I don't feel like cooking I buy a ready meal or a pizza for the oven. If I want restaurant food, I'd rather eat it in a restaurant.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/05/2019 13:48

we never get takeaways

We rarely eat out together - birthdays maybe but even then not always. I do eat out with friends quite regularly though - maybe twice a month. And I probably spend £20 - £30 each time. We live rurally so I always have to drive, which means no drink so that makes it a bit cheaper.

SneakyGremlins · 05/05/2019 13:50

I get a Chinese once a fortnight if I can afford it - £5.60 so that's £11ish a month, often just £5.60 a month though as not enough spare for a takeaway Grin

PickleSarnie · 05/05/2019 14:23

We've had takeaways 3 times in the 9 years we've been in this house. I always feel a bit grubby and used after a takeaway.

I do get Itsu for lunch about once a week though.

soundsystem · 05/05/2019 14:31

Oh god, I don't really want to total it up. Definitely an area we could cut back! Once a week with the DC, not a fancy meal out but lunch in Pret or Nandos or similar if we're out for the day. Then takeaway for DH and I maybe 3 times a month (after DC are in bed). Then usually out for coffee at least once over the weekend.

Luckily I get fed at work so I never have to buy lunch or coffee in the week so I convince myself that balances it out a bit!

Tbf, pre-DC I would have spent the same on nights out/in the pub...

BrokenWing · 05/05/2019 14:35

We have a takeaway most Saturdays (around £20). I go out to eat with friends around once a month or so (probably £50ish).

Sgtmajormummy · 05/05/2019 15:03

We hardly ever have a takeaway.
By the time I’ve gone out, waited in line for it to be cooked and brought it home, I could have thrown something from the freezer into the microwave. Thinking hard, the others had a pizza delivery just over a year ago when we got back late from holiday. Special diet means I often can’t eat what’s on offer.

We do eat out regularly, though. Maybe once a fortnight to a booked restaurant so I work my diet around what I’m expecting to order. And once we’re there we don’t really look at the prices, just order what looks interesting. I’m not great on fish cooking so DH often goes for that. We order starter, main and dessert which for 4 can regularly go over £100, even without fancy drinks.

But we budget for it and try to make every meal out a memorable occasion.

notacooldad · 05/05/2019 15:08

I have an Indian take out about once a year if that!
I never go to a burger place like McDonalds or Burger king.
Colleagues at work go to KFC or similar a couple of times a week for lunch or tea but I take my own meals at work or take them in.

nannyplummyarse · 05/05/2019 15:09

We don't eat out a lot because it usually costs about £120-140 a time 🙈

We get a takeaway every Friday which depending on what it is costs between £30-£50

UnPocoLoco2 · 05/05/2019 17:54

We used to buy dominos once a week or kfc once a week but after a lot of difficulty we stopped. It's such an expensive and addictive habit. This crap is packed with salt, sugar, msg and god knows what else. We very occasionally ( once a month) buy a bag of chips from the chippy. But at about £3.10 for a bag it's cheaper for us to make our own at home from now on.

SimonJT · 05/05/2019 17:55

A bit too much, we have lunch out friday to sunday each week.

UnPocoLoco2 · 05/05/2019 17:56

We never eat out. There's 5 of us here. It's expensive.
